Actors Needed for Stage Play "Sense and Sensiblity"

Protagonist. She is the “sense” in sense and sensibility. She is reserved and pragmatic, does not let emotions sway her even if it is to her detriment.

Secondary protagonist. She is the “sensibility”. She is emotional, passionate, and impulsive; often letting her emotions guide her decision making. This is in stark contrast to her more reserved sister.

Mother of Elinore & Marianne Dashwood, after her husband’s passing she does all she can to make sure her girls are taken care of while balancing their whirlwinds of emotions and romances, while having lost her own love and must leave the home they shared together, surrendering it to her unkind daughter in law, Fanny.

Half brother to Elinore & Marianne, not malicious but greedy, easily manipulated by his wife, week willed and considered a “gentleman of excuses”, involved in the Dashwood women’s inheritance issues.

Central antagonist. She is the wife of John Dashwood, and sister of Edward and Robert Ferrars. She is considered manipulative, domineering, cold and selfish. Very money and status oriented, an avid social climber and eager to get Mrs. Dashwood and her daughters out of her husband’s newly inherited home.

Mid 20s. Quite the gentleman, honorable and kind, but also shy and reserved. He has difficulty expressing himself in social situations. He is the love interest of Elinore. Although his obligations, strong sense of duty, and loyalty make things complicated, he knows who he is and is not afraid in the end to follow his heart.

He is a man of few words and therefore often initially perceived as dull/boring. However, he is mature and capable. He has traveled and experienced the world. There is a sensitive soul underneath his quiet demeanor, an emotional and thoughtful man with honor and integrity. He is a loyal and steadfast friend to Elinore, as well as devoted to Marianne.

Ultimately the villain of S&S. He is handsome, charming, and very manipulative. A romance interest of Marianne, he paints himself a hero to gain her affection only to later show his true colors by breaking her heart in a cowardly manner. His main motivation is his own ambition - financial gain and social standing. He is often described as selfish and morally corrupt.

A more minor but pivotal character. She pretends to be a true friend to Elinore, while secretly planning to marry Edward. She is very charming and uses her outside warmth to manipulate and manufacture situations to her advantage. Very calculated and self-interested, she is driven by a desire for wealth and social advancement and does not care who her actions may hurt in the process.

Mother-in-law to Sir John Middleton, she serves as a maternal figure to the Dashwood sisters and is a compassionate caretaker. However she has an avid interest in matchmaking for young people, she and her son in law enjoy meddling in other’s affairs which is irritating to the reserved Elinore and Marianne. Yet she possesses a practical and common sensical outlook when it comes to life – seeing through the superficialities others miss. Despite her annoying tendencies, she is a genuinely kind.

Son-in-law to Mrs. Jennings and owner of Barton Park, Sir John is a country squire that is kind and generous. He is the one to provide Barton Cottage to the widowed Dashwood family after they lose their home. A country sportsman that enjoys hunting, he is known for his good humored nature, and loyalty to family and friends.

Daughter to Mrs. Jennings and wife to Sir John. In contrast to her husband, she is well-bred and fashionable, but reserved and cold. She has the elegance her husband lacks. She is quieter, but still very polite. Tall and striking. Her main concerns are with the maintenance of her household, Barton Park. Smaller Roles (servants, possible neighbors, etc.) - these can be doubled or reduced depending on production needs.
