5 roles
Historical figure: Born 1868 — began work at Harvard Observatory. Fiercely smart, funny, curious, and overflowing with determination. Spilling over her own traditionalism. Wears a period hearing aid.
Historical basis: Inspired by Henrietta’s real sisters (particularly Grace Leavitt, close in age). A sweet, creative homebody. A composer. Must sing a hymn a cappella; piano skills would be an asset but not necessary.
Historical basis: Fictional character. The head astronomer’s apprentice… and “the man.” Earnest, unintentionally condescending, but grows curious, supportive, and passionate.
Historical figure: Born 1863 — a leading astronomer in her 40s at the time depicted. Strict supervisor, a confident leader, and a fiercely loyal friend. Terse and sure. Grows into a firebrand and a force in the field.
Historical figure: Born 1857 — established astronomer during the events. Smart as a whip, warm, and boisterous. A Scottish immigrant known for cataloguing thousands of stars and contributing major discoveries. (Read without an accent, or with a light Scottish accent if comfortable).
