A freelance graphic artist who has received a life-saving heart transplant but is conflicted about what to do with her new life. Her loss of connection with her family, her boyfriend, her barbed sense of humor are indicative of someone dealing with the early onset of depression. A lead female opportunity to explore depression, sarcastic self-elevation and opportunity needs the right actor to bring themselves and all their skill to the role.
An accountant with aspirations of being a photographer. Jack died in a car accident before the play begins and donated his heart to Joy. Jack is single, fashionably hipster-ish and a disappointment to his father Hank who wanted Jack to follow his footsteps of the family business. Jack remains on stage for most of the play. Requires a male with strong stage presence, incredible patience and subtle variations. His contribution to the show should be immense even though he doesn't often speak.
Alice is Jack's mother grieving the loss of her son while trying to hold her family and her marriage together. She is a solid, loving and has an enduring presence. Alice is crucial to the momentum of the play, attempting to drag both Joy and Hank from their grief while trying come to terms with it herself. Alice is the hero of this play, like many mothers are for their family.
Hank is Jack's father and Alice's husband. Nearing retirement as head of a small building supplies company. Hank is trying very hard to wallow in or even barely acknowledge his grief and guilt about Jack. He can be quite abrasive, prone to alcohol and doesn't really want to talk to anyone about anything.
Sammy is Jack's sister and daughter of Alice and Hank. A pre-school teacher she is somewhat "new agey". She really wants to help all the time, she's writes a blog that over-shares her life and lets emotions get the better of her. A really fun role for the right misfit.
Two roles for same person: Nurse is a very competent but somewhat condescending nurse during Joy's staying in hospital. Darla is Joy's best friend. A functionary, somewhat flamboyant, artsy, very caring friend. Darla is there to give Joy motivation and help. An enjoyable small couple of roles for an actor who excels at characterisation or being over the top.
