About the project: From Steve Martin and Edie Brickell comes Bright Star, a stunning and heartfelt musical inspired by a true story of love, loss, and forgiveness. set against the backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains, of North Carolina, during the 1920's and 1940's. The story unfolds, following the life of literary editor Alice Murphy as she uncovers a secret from her past that changes her life forever. Featuring a vibrant bluegrass score, Bright Star is a moving and joyous celebration of the human spirit. Additional info: Call Backs, Monday 12/8 @ 7 PM Please park in the town parking lot across the railroad tracks form the side of the theatre. Do not use the parking lot for the urgent care center; you will be towed. Auditions will be comprised of cold readings from the script & singing performance of 16-32 bars of actor selected song similar to the folk/bluegrass style of music in the show. (Please -Do NOT select a song from the show) Bring sheet music in the correct key. Will NOT be singing to CD's. (Dance auditions will be held at Callbacks) Please come prepared to list any conflicts you would have during the rehearsal process from December 10, 2025 – March 29, 2026 (vacations, classes, work, travel, etc.). All technical rehearsals and performances are mandatory. First Read-Through: Dec. 13th Rehearsals begin: Dec. 15th Tech rehearsals: Feb. 23rd to Mar. 12, 2026 Performances will be 3/13/26 through 3/29/26 (Fridays @ 8 PM, Saturdays @ 8 PM, and Sundays @ 3PM). Mezzo-Soprano - Plays both 16-17 & 36-37. Alice at age 36-37 is an editor of a southern literary magazine; intelligent, attractive, professional - but with an air of melancholy. Young Alice at age 16-17 is rebellious, high-spirited, adventurous - looking to break out of small-town life and experience the world. She must be very strong singer and comfortable in folk and bluegrass style.
Tenor - A young soldier returning home from WWII; an aspiring young writer; fresh, open, optimistic, charming and a little naive.
Tenor: Plays both age 18-20 and 38-40. Jimmy Ray in his early 20's in flashbacks is Mayor Dobbs' son and young Alice's beau; handsome, boyishly charming, well-built and intelligent; from a family of wealth and power and is being groomed by his father for a similar future in the family business; an independent thinker who is not afraid to stand up to his father for what he believes in; he has a sense or personal responsibility and morality as well as a deep reserve of passion and emotion.
Soprano - A small-town bookstore owner; a childhood friend of Billy's who now harbors romantic feelings towards him; a natural beauty with a keen intellect.
Baritone - Alice's father; an authoritative and a stern disciplinarian; devoutly religious, hard-working, a poor but proud farmer.
Mezzo-Soprano: Alice's mother. A caretaker to her family and her rural community. A warm, loving, sensible woman. Hardworking, with great inner strength and compassion.
Baritone - The Mayor of Zebulon; a political and financial powerbroker - distinguished, an imposing and controlling presence; has a genuine interest in protecting his son's future and his family name, but in doing so, is ultimately pushed to a point of extreme and irrevocable cruelty.
Baritone-Tenor - Loyal assistant to Mayor Josiah Dobbs.
Tenor - Billy's father. A widower. Spry, good looking. Kind hearted, if a bit lonely.
"Non-singer" - The local family doctor of Zebulon.
Soprano - A junior editor at a literary magazine. An ambitious, professional young "modern" career woman of the 1940's. Strong, forthright and provocative with a sharp sense of humor.
