He/him. Ostensibly the main character of the play (but is he really?). He is prone to melancholy and neurosis and is chronically single, in part due to his avoidant tendencies. While his personal issues can make him self-centred at times, he is genuinely invested in becoming a better friend and a healthier person.
He/him. A therapist. He is a means by which Sam seeks to grow and understand himself. In his own right, he is caring, competent, perceptive and professional. Like everyone, he probably has his own issues, but he tends not to take these into the office with him.
He/him. Sam’s best friend and roommate. He grew up with Sam and Phoebe. He’s a pretty chill guy, especially compared to Sam. He is optimistic and thoughtful and helps Sam see beyond his issues. Jamie’s relative lack of idealism is an asset, but it was earned at a price. While Sam has firmly rejected his Christian upbringing, Jamie has moments of religious fear, though he is by no means a pious person.
She/her. Sam’s eventual love interest. A well-read artist with an outgoing and charming personality. Her apparent strength and assertiveness make her a frequent object of male idealization. Aware and weary of this, she longs to be seen and accepted as a whole person – weaknesses and all.
