6 roles
Gender-queer. Jeannie is an open-minded, melancholic thinker/feeler. She likes spending time with her friends, listening to alternative rock and having fun, but she struggles with a feeling of alienation even when with her closest friends. She feels out of place in the world, like something is deeply wrong with her and she can't quite grasp what it is. Jeannie is going through the early stages of transgender revelation.
Gender-queer. Mareisclaug is a marsh creature who will do the bidding of any asker it deems worthy. They are called upon by the group of friends to wreak havoc on Jeannie's ex's life. Upon meeting Jeannie, Mareisclaug experiences mutual gender envy toward her. After spending time with Jeannie and her friends, Mareisclaug yearns to live like her and leave the marsh.
Nelly is Jeannie's best friend. She has the energy of a nihilistic rock star. She is a stick-it-to-the-man kind of person who is strong-willed and independent, partially as a result of experiencing a rough upbringing. She is a lesbian with a crush on her close friend Louise but has been keeping her feelings to herself. While she is quick-witted and can exhibit raucous behavior, she is a great friend with a lot of compassion.
Louise is part of Jeannie's best friend group. She is a pure-hearted hopeless romantic. She is humorous and can be both bubbly and naive. However, she has a strong sense of justice and cares a lot about her friends. Louise enjoys drawing and has a crush on Samuel who is the best friend of Jeannie's ex-boyfriend. She ends up writing a love spell for him on the back of the same paper used to try to summon Mareisclaug.
Bea is also part of Jeannie's best friend group. From a well-off family, Bea is an extroverted hobby-hopper who has recently got into witchcraft. She is eccentric and really leans into the persona of her new phase. She is also the host of the sleepover while her family is away at a ski lodge. Out of all of the friends, she is the most like "the mom friend." She is someone who isn't afraid to take charge.
Charlie is Jeannie's clean-cut ex-boyfriend. He was raised in the church but he is in a rock band that he tries to act cool for. He has rather traditional views and acts like a nice guy but he's actually a goody-two-shoes a**hole who wants a cool reputation. He is like if a church-going academic were to throw on a leather jacket. He does not agree with Jeannie's feelings around gender and said awful things to her in the fight that led them to break up.
