A seemingly respectable gentleman living a double life between his home in the country and the city, where he goes by the name Ernest. He wishes to marry Gwendolen but must first overcome Lady Bracknell’s disapproval of his odd origins.
Jack’s friend and Gwendolen’s cousin. Witty, self-absorbed, and a lover of immorality, he absconds to the country when he learns of Jack’s young ward Cecily.
The daughter of Lady Bracknell and a sophisticated, well-mannered lady from the city. She wants to marry Jack, though this hinges on her belief that his name is Ernest.
Jack’s ward who lives in the country. Young and imaginative, she’s fascinated by stories of her Uncle Jack’s wicked brother Ernest and has decided that she must marry him.
Algernon’s aunt and Gwendolen’s mother. A stern and commanding matriarch, Lady Bracknell will see that her daughter marries well (and certainly not to a man with a handbag for parents).
Cecily’s governess. Proper and narrow-minded like Lady Bracknell though significantly less clever. She possesses a secret creative side, having once written a novel that was lost.
A country vicar who’s poorly hiding his desire for Miss Prism.
