Louise is the more anxious of the two friends - she is often plagued by superstitions and grief for the things she has lost. She uses the letters she sends to her friend as a diary, looking for some sort of resolution to her problems, even though she knows there isn't one.
Lola is grounded, calm, and funny. She is used to having to talk Louise off the edge, and knows how to balance sincerity with dry humor in order to bring her friend back down to earth. Though she hides it better, Lola shares many of the same worries that Louise does.
