On the day she is moving away from the only town she's ever known, Lorie must bring herself to face her family home and say goodbye to the memories she once shared with her now-deceased family. LEAD.Slim, smart, caring, selfless. She is worn and tired from grieving the loss of her family, while dealing with her strict Uncle Richard and timid Aunt Mildred. She is closest to her little brother Billy (17), who made her into a tomboy. Her family was everything to her and her heart yearns to see them again.
DAY PLAYER. Lorie’s aunt. Somber, timid, caring, worn. Mildred cares deeply for her niece, Lorie, and tries her hardest to reason with her sometimes inconsiderate and cold husband, Richard. She is grieving the loss of her brother and his family. Lorie is all she has left of them.
DAY PLAYER. Lorie’s uncle. Cold, tired, stern. Richard, like everyone else, is trying to find life again after the suffering of the Great Depression. As a farmer, he is tough and a very hard worker. He decides to pull his family away from Grovewood, Illinois to escape the depressing memories and have a fresh start in Virginia. He always has his family’s best interests at heart.
DAY PLAYER. Lorie’s mother. Kind and caring, Alice would do anything to make her children happy. When Lorie was sick, she gave up every last penny, would eat much less, and would work hard to make ends meet to keep her precious daughter alive. She is the epitome of motherhood. Her children look up to her fondly and their smiles make her world shine brighter.
DAY PLAYER. Lorie’s father. Happy, loving, sentimental. He is everything a great father should be. He cherishes every little moment with his children and does not like conflict, but is good at resolving it. He values peace, happiness, and making the most out of his life with his wife and children.
