"GIRL FROM THE NORTH COUNTRY" The proprietor of a boarding house that will soon be foreclosed by the bank. Caretaker for his wife, who suffers from early onset dementia but who, prior to her decline, told him she had fallen out of love and was finished with him. He sees everything slipping away and tries to do the right thing despite his many flaws.
"GIRL FROM THE NORTH COUNTRY" Nick’s wife. She suffers from dementia, though we frequently see flashes of her blunt, plainspoken personality. Her moments of lucidity come and go, but she is always watching.
"GIRL FROM THE NORTH COUNTRY" Nick and Elizabeth’s adopted daughter. She is unexpectedly pregnant and balks at the idea of being married off for convenience to the elderly Mr. Perry. She yearns to fly away, even if she can’t see clearly how to do so just yet. Tenderly cares for her mother Elizabeth.
"GIRL FROM THE NORTH COUNTRY" Nick and Elizabeth’s son. An aspiring writer whose ambition is in conflict with his ennui and self-destructive tendencies. He yearns for adventure and an artist’s life but is stunted and frustrated.
"GIRL FROM THE NORTH COUNTRY" A tenant in the Laines’ boarding house. She is having an affair with Nick, but even so is nurturing to Elizabeth. She is growing frustrated by Nick’s emotional unavailability. She is waiting on an inheritance from her late husband, and she sees this as a springboard into a new start, though she discovers that life’s plans don’t always work out as expected.
"GIRL FROM THE NORTH COUNTRY" A former factory owner. Now destitute, he has big ambitions about a financial comeback. He still comports himself like a big shot but privately harbors frustrations and insecurities. He is unaware that he carries an air of defeat.
"GIRL FROM THE NORTH COUNTRY" Married to Mr. Burke. She used to live the good life and now feels debased from living in poverty. Like her husband, she still comports herself with elegance though is much more realistic and determined than he. She doesn’t know how to be poor, but she is no snob. She seeks distraction and escape from her circumstances, even if it means dabbling in morphine use.
"GIRL FROM THE NORTH COUNTRY" Son to Mr. and Mrs. Burke. He is developmentally disabled. While his spirit is generally gentle, he struggles with a lack of impulse control that can sometimes manifest with accidental physical violence. He seeks the affection of his father, though often finds himself the object of his father’s frustrations.
"GIRL FROM THE NORTH COUNTRY" A boxer and guest at the boarding house. He carries many secrets, including a wife and child whom he has abandoned. He was wrongfully convicted of a crime he didn’t commit and is now on the run.
"GIRL FROM THE NORTH COUNTRY" A Bible salesman who arrives at the boarding house in the dead of night with Joe. He is a mysterious person whose capacity for darkness initially reveals itself in subtle ways, but reaches a more direct crescendo when he believes his back is against the wall.
"GIRL FROM THE NORTH COUNTRY" A shoe mender. Lonely widower. Seeks to marry the young Marianne. His intentions may appear pure on the surface, but Elizabeth, who has known him for decades and still holds on to distant memories despite her condition, reveals his problematic history of lechery and sexual harassment, much to his chagrin.
"GIRL FROM THE NORTH COUNTRY" Knows everyone. Has struggled with morphine addiction, though he tries to manage it on his own. He is kindhearted. Serves as a narrator of the story, so he often speaks directly to the audience with insights about the other characters.
"GIRL FROM THE NORTH COUNTRY" Gene’s ex-girlfriend. Still harbors feelings for Gene, but has decided to unstick herself from her current circumstances and marry another young man. This character also joins as part of the ensemble.

"VENUS" A woman, lithe, a poise that’s almost brittle. The object of Beth’s affection and frustration. She’s clearly into Beth less than Beth is into her.
"VENUS" A woman, blunt, not great with boundaries. She’s really into Beth, but can’t help but be brusque and impatient with her.
"WIT" Chief of Medical Oncology, University Hospital. A brilliant doctor. He respects Vivian as a fellow scholar. He shows more humanity than his younger students and fellows, but ultimately prioritizes the extending of life over matters of the soul or heart.
"WIT" Clinical Fellow, Medical Oncology Branch. Brilliant young mind. His ambition can blind him to the humanity of others.
"WIT" Primary Nurse, Cancer Inpatient Unit. Susie is an excellent nurse, and she tenderly cares for Vivian. She is plainspoken and possesses a deep understanding of people. Empathetic and kind.
"WIT" Professor Emerita of English Literature. Vivian’s former mentor. She is an academic titan with a formidable mind. Unlike Vivian, she has carved out a life for herself beyond academia. Now retired, Dr. Ashford is family-oriented and cares deeply for Vivian in her time of suffering.
"WIT" Vivian’s father. Somewhat removed; he established Vivian’s priority of learning and reading. Doubles as Dr. Kelekian.

"CHOIR BOY" He is the headmaster of Charles R. Drew Prep School for Boys and the youngest ever to hold the position. He is competent and put together, yet approachable. Probably has a lot riding on his shoulders. He is trying to save something. Not sure if that is himself or the school… maybe both. Uncle to Bobby.
"CHOIR BOY" Older than Headmaster Marrow. Once marched with Martin Luther King, Jr. He was a mover and shaker during the Civil Rights movement. A visiting teacher at Charles R. Drew Prep School for Boys. He questions if he still has the power and gumption to make a difference in these young boys' lives. He puts his foot in his mouth and is awkwardly funny.
"I NEVER ASKED FOR A GOFUNDME" PhD student in a relationship with Avery. Southern and raised Baptist. The black sheep of her family.
"I NEVER ASKED FOR A GOFUNDME" AFAB trans-masc/nonbinary early 30's, Puerto Rican, East Coast Raised, has recently had top surgery. Loves NCAA women’s basketball.

A mildly blundering guardian angel/Greek chorus/queer ancestor of sorts who pops up in (often unsuccessful) attempts to help Avery and Millie navigate the chaos. Doubles as RADIO ANNOUNCER, FARMACÉUTICA THE PHARMACIST, FRANCINE, SERVER, DOLLY PARTON, MARY MAGDALENE, DOCTOR, GAY JESUS, MARJORIE TAYLOR GREENE, GODLY MUFASA VOICE, and DOORDASH (yes, in that order).
