Now a grown man, Jermaine carries the scars of his childhood into adulthood. At 32, he appears stable, responsible, and loving-devoted to his wife and excited, yet anxious, about becoming a father. His exterior shows strength, but his interior is a battlefield of grief, trauma, and unresolved shame. Packing up his late mother's home forces him to confront memories he's long buried. Jermaine embodies the tension between the man he is becoming and the boy still frozen in time.
annette is a single Caribbean mother in her late 30's, strong-willed, protective, and deeply caring. She balances grief from losing her husband with the overwhelming responsibility of raising her children. She tries to be both nurturer and disciplinarian but often feels ill-equipped, especially when navigating Jermaine's adolescence alone. Annette is perceptive, quick to anger when betrayed, but her foundation is love.
Charlene is a charming black woman early 30's who loves to party. Beneath her charm is a broken, self-destructive woman struggling with addiction, poor choices, and self-hatred. Charlene spirals between moments of affection and recklessness. Charlene embodies contradiction-beloved family member and source of trauma, victim and perpetrator-leaving behind a legacy of silence and unresolved pain.
