(Male-identifying). A country gentleman with a secret double life in London, where he goes by the name “Ernest.” Earnest, respectable, and somewhat serious, but capable of charm and wit.
(Male-identifying). Jack’s friend and Gwendolen’s cousin. Witty, playful, indulgent, and a master of clever banter. A charming rogue who loves bending rules.
(Female-identifying). Algernon’s cousin and Jack’s beloved. Elegant, confident, and witty. Obsessed with marrying a man named Ernest, she has both sharpness and warmth.
(Female-identifying). Jack’s young ward, imaginative and romantic. Innocent in some ways but capable of sly cleverness.
(Female identifying/any gender). Gwendolen’s mother and the formidable guardian of Victorian propriety. Sharp, commanding, and often outrageous in her pronouncements. A comic powerhouse role.
(Female identifying). Cecily’s governess. Dutiful and proper, but with repressed romantic longings. Earnest but prone to small hypocrisies.
(Male-identifying). The local rector. Amiable, slightly absent-minded, and caught up in a flirtation with Miss Prism.
Lane/Merriman: two butlers (one in London, one in the country). Deadpan, dry, and excellent with timing. Option to be double-cast.
