Actors for Production of "Hystyria: A Carmilla Adaptation"
Seeking cast for "Hystyria: A Carmilla Adaptation". ONLY LOCAL TALENT WILL BE CONSIDERED. See more info below. About the project: Hystyria is a deliberately queer reframing of Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu's gothic novella Carmilla that will be performing at the New York Theater Festival this winter. "When Laura experiences an unsettlingly real night visitation, her deeply English, deeply patriarchical household dismisses it as a perfectly feminine affliction. Until Carmilla arrives." The piece is contemporary, intimate, female-centric, and draws heavily on physical theatre techniques to explore desire, autonomy, and transformation. Rate: Stipend dependent on fundraising. Additional info: Non-Union actors of all body types, gender identities, ethncities, and backgrounds are encouraged to apply for any role(s) they choose regardless of character gender. Depending on audition results, callbacks projected November 2nd/3rd. TBD. If you have not heard from directors past October 15th do not assume you are not in consideration or have not been cast. Handful of virtual tablework sessions projected between 11/7 and 12/14. Rehearsals: Approximately 1/4 through 1/29. Performances: 1/29, 1/31, 2/1. If you are interested, please apply.

A suffocatingly lonely ingenue-adjacent. Driven by a strong sense of curiosity and a deep longing for connection. She is not passive, she is trapped. Protected, corrected, contained. Pulled between repression and awakening. But hungry.
A dream made flesh. A catalyst. Alluring, intense, and incredibly enigmatic. Hot-and-cold. Weirdo kid who is conveniently also hot so it makes them mysterious… or something. Longs for some kind of purity.
A widowed English veteran living abroad in Styria. Laura’s solid, grounded, and well-meaning father. His love for Laura is genuine, yet it unknowingly presses upon her like the weight of the schloss itself.
Highly educated and cold physician. Mystery, womanhood, and desire all must be tamed beneath his diagnosis.
Ever watchful, stoic, pious, and quick to shut down any mention of the supernatural.
Laura's finishing governess and tutor. Romantic. Though she has seen much of the world, she still can see the beauty in it. There is a quiet and mysterious independence about her.
