9 roles
Christopher's classroom teacher, and the narrator of the play. Siobhan is level-headed and professional, but also caring and gentle. She is a stable, calm, nurturing presence in Christopher's life, and one of the few people he trusts completely. Siobhan recognizes the ways Christopher is exceptional, and seeks to foster his growth in safe ways.
Christopher's father, raising him by himself after Judy leaves. Ed bears the full weight of not only single parenthood, but also raising a child with developmental difficulties. He is sometimes stern and always protective, wanting to keep Christopher safe, out of trouble, and in environments where he knows Christopher can both thrive and be supervised (or controlled). He has a bit of a temper.
Christopher's mother, who disappears before the events of the play. In Act 1, Judy represents Christopher's memory of her; an ethereal, ideal mother. As the play goes on, more of Judy's character is revealed; she is a free spirit, and had more trouble than Ed coping with the difficulties of Christopher's upbringing. Like Ed, Judy is far from perfect but does love Christopher.
Mrs. Shears: Christopher's neighbor and Wellington's owner. Not a fan of Christopher or Ed. Mrs. Gascoyne: The principal of Christopher's school. Woman on Train: A kind but apathetic stranger. Shopkeeper: A rude London shopkeeper.
Mr. Shears (Roger): Mrs. Shears' ex-husband and Judy's lover. A straight-laced man with a temper and a distaste for anything out of the ordinary. Duty Sergeant: A Swindon police officer. Patient with Christopher. Mr. Wise: A snarky neighbor who passes Christopher in the street. Man Behind Counter: Ticket-booth operator at the Swindon train station. Just doing his job. Drunk One: A drunk man who accosts Christopher on the train.
Policeman: A policeman who deals with Christopher after he finds Wellington. Snarky and not very friendly. Mr. Thompson: Christopher's neighbor. He doesn't have anything to do with Wellington's murder and doesn't want to get involved. Drunk Two: A drunk man who accosts Christopher on the train. Man With Socks London Policeman
Reverend Peters: A pastor who works at Christopher's school. Very kind, very patient, but doesn't quite know how to reconcile religion with Christopher's mind. Uncle Terry: Christopher's uncle. He smokes cigarettes and strokes Christopher's hair. He doesn't much like Uncle Terry. Station Policeman Station Guard
No. 40: Christopher's neighbor. Very kind. Lady in Street: A woman Christopher asks for directions. She's helpful but short on patience. Information: A woman who works at the Tube station. Just doing her job. Christopher confuses her. Punk Girl: A cockney girl who sees Christopher on the train tracks. Much more decisive than Man With Socks in helping him up.
Mrs. Alexander: Christopher's kind old neighbor. She's a bit of a gossip and is the only adult willing to clue Christopher into what is actually going on. She has love and patience for Christopher and he develops trust for her. Posh Woman: A woman on the train who is very upset that Christopher is touching her bag.
