About the project: A surrealist dark comedy telling the story of a greedy cheese merchant determined to join an elite cheese-tasting society. When a frustrated cheesemaker is denied his lifelong goal of joining an elite cheese society, he thinks his dreams are done for. But, after rudely dismissing a mysterious figure in need of food, he is cursed and discovers that his own body has started turning into cheese. The cheese merchant must decide how much of himself he is willing to sell for his ambition. (LEAD) Gideon is motivated by his ambition, jealousy, and greed. He is willing to do whatever he can to be accepted into the “Cheese Board,” even if it is detrimental to his well-being in the long run. He has this hunger to be at the top, based on an insecurity and a jealousy of others who, in his mind, are hacks. (Think: Daniel Radcliffe, Adam Driver.)
(Lead) Mark is Gideon’s apprentice in the cheese shop. Mark is not nearly as ambitious as Gideon, but tries to help where he can, even if he is not the most skilled cheese merchant apprentice. Mark is Gideon’s moral compass, trying to steer him toward kindness, while Gideon completely ignores these values. Mark wants the approval of Gideon, while at the same time, he is skeptical of his boss's rationale. (Think: Jack Dylan Grazer, Caleb McLaughlin, Roman Griffin Davis.)
The lords are selfish, cold, and busy. They have been in this elite society for so long that they have no empathy for others and are very to the point. “The Cheese Board” has many of these tastings in a day, so they are trying to get through them as quickly as possible. (Think: John Malkovich, Willem Dafoe, Laurence Fishburne, Jesse Plemons, LaKeith Stanfield, Lucy Liu, Tilda Swinton.)
The radio announcer sounds straight out of the 1950s. This radio announcer plays his favorite tunes and chats about the latest news in the cheese industry. (Think: Nathan Lane, John Mulaney.) VOICE OVER ONLY.
