Ebenezer Scrooge is the focal character of the play. He is a cold, miserly old man who once knew what it meant to love and live, but who is now a lonely, greedy, bitter old grouch. Deep inside, he is a good person who has allowed his pain to destroy him from within. He is rude, stubborn, stuffy, angry, closed-minded, greedy, snobby – and yet somehow not entirely unlikeable. Could be a younger tag-along “busybody-in-training” or could be closer in age to Mrs. Upton. Quirky, well-bred but nerdy and not a gifted speaker. Quite comical, stiff, unsure of herself, may be hard of hearing or have a quirky voice or be asthmatic, etc. – great opportunity to create a funny character! Upper class English dialect.
