About the project: Set in Saanich BC, during the Omicron outbreak of COVID, Masks is a satire about a group of university students who are coming of age in a digital era. The story revolves around a group of students with wide-ranging world views who are preparing for a party on the weekend. The story dives into a wide range of themes and topics such as Depression, Porn addiction, Extremist politics, existential dread and sexuality. All of these topics are woven into the character arcs and climax into an emotional ending that leaves the two main characters, Emile and Marcus, in quarantine. Marcus is a 19-year-old from Ottawa who is Bilingual. In high school, he was a climate change activist, but the COVID-19 pandemic made him apathetic to the cause. He is close with Lucy, who helps him on a journey of bi-curiosity. Marcus is anxious and feels like he is falling behind because of his lack of sexual experience. His lack of experience fuels a porn addiction that he is ashamed of.
Emile is a 20-year-old dual citizen from Vermont. He is a massive history buff and can be socially awkward. He feels a lot of anger and guilt from a previous relationship that is still in his life. He isn't very close to anyone except Marcus. He is dyslexic and has a hard time with left and right. His love for history and his own personal history clash when depression creeps into the story.
Lucy is a 20-year-old girl from Vancouver who is an alternative leftist. She is of Asian descent (either South or East) and lives for the drama and the party. She has a slight cocaine issue, but that only helps her to be the biggest yapper at the party. She is slightly brain-rotted from TikTok.
Jacob is a 21-year-old from Tsawwassen who is the biggest stoner you've met. He only exists to drink and smoke. He is a conspiracy theorist, right-winger who is refusing to get his COVID-19 vaccine. His politics are a flash point because of the popular leftist politics at Uni, which makes him feel like a martyr for the right. He is completely brain-rotted from poppers, cocaine and QAnon-style conspiracies.
Grant is an Australian finance bro who loves to drink. He acts as a mediator to the wild views of Jacob and Lucy, as he is much more in the Centre. He loves a pint and a game of rugby. He is full of ADHD energy, Chaos and ignorance.
