Naïve and foolish, Athan thinks he knows what he wants from life and what it is to be expected of him — learning soon enough that you can never be prepared for what is behind the next door. Though he is slow to realize the importance of every moment, and too clumsy to show it, Athan is a deeply caring and empathetic person. He is willing to push everything out of his way to spend more time with someone he loves.
After living as a rebellious young Athan, the Hooded Man walks through the hallway of his life once again. This time, he reflects on his past, accepting it for what it is, knowing he cannot change it. Melancholic and somewhat regretful, he guides Athan, emphasizing the importance of embracing every stage of life, whether joyful or somber.
Athan’s mother wanted nothing but the best for her family. Though determined, she has second-guessed her life decisions ever since she married Rick. She sometimes wonders how different her fate would be if she hadn't given up her career to start a family. During the first years of Athan’s life and into his adolescence, she tried very hard to convince herself that her purpose was fulfilled, but lately, that spark has slowly been dying.
Athan’s father, Rick, is a troubled man. He learned from his family to hide his true feelings and often relies on bad habits to forget his past mistakes. He was able to distance himself from his vices when he found a sense of purpose, such as when he married his childhood friend, Emma. However, it didn't last long. Overwhelmed by regret and fearing that he won’t make the most of his life, Rick sees Athan as a chance to start over.
Serene and reserved, Leah doesn’t believe in fate. Instead, she has decided to create meaning from what she has been given. Her compliance clashes with Athan’s defiant nature. He taught her not to conform, which led her to end their relationship several times. However, Leah sees her repeated returns to Athan as a sign to stay even longer, rather than as a sign to leave him.
