About the project: This Tony Award–winning musical comedy is a hilarious and heartfelt look at the pressure and joy of competition. Six quirky adolescents compete in a local spelling bee, run by equally quirky adults, where personalities clash, friendships form, and hearts are opened. With improvisation and audience participation, every performance is slightly different—making it a wild and unforgettable ride! Additional info: Be prepared for cold readings and short improvisation exercises. Wear comfortable clothing for light movement, there will be a dance audition. Audition musical selections (see the document attached)—take the time to learn them as you will perform these at your audition. Note from the Musical Director: - These are PREPARED auditions. Please have the content memorized and present the song in character. - You may prepare an audition cut for more than one character. - Auditions will use the tracks provided in these materials (see the attachment) and no microphones will be used. - Use the Broadway Cast Album for reference. Mezzo-Soprano, G#3–D5. The bee’s moderator and a former champion. Warm, officious, and loves every minute of her job.
Spoken Role. The word pronouncer. Dry, deadpan humor; enjoys his authority. Improv skills and experience greatly encouraged.
Tenor, E3–A4. The “Official Comfort Counselor.” Gruff exterior, surprisingly tender.
Soprano, B3–F5. A shy, lonely girl who loves words and hopes her absent parents will come watch her compete.
Tenor, E3–B4. Awkward, confident, and known for his “magic foot” spelling technique.
Mezzo-Soprano, A3–F5. The youngest speller. Intense, politically aware, and pressured by her two overbearing dads.
Tenor A2–G4/Mezzo-Soprano A3–D5. Goofy, childlike, and unexpectedly talented.
Mezzo-Soprano, C4–E5. An overachiever who excels at everything—secretly longs for freedom.
Tenor, C3–B4. Last year’s champion. Athletic, confident, navigating adolescence.
