He is going back to San Francisco, where he spent his final night in the USA before being shipped out. His memories of that night floor back: November 21, 1963. Eddie and his best friends and fellow marines, Boland and Bernstein, decide to spend their last night before deployment, having a party with stakes involved. A “dogfight”: whoever can find and bring the ugliest girl to the party, wins. The marines enthusiastically jump into the cruel contest, where Eddie meets Rose, a reserved waitress who’s never been on a date. Eddie later has a change of heart, and she learns about the dogfight but he’s determined to not let it define her as an ugly, pathetic girl. Her optimism has a profound effect on Eddie’s worldview.
