About the project: Storyline: Set in the unforgiving landscape of rural Manitoba, NORTHERN LIGHTS is a raw, high-stakes drama about 17-year-old Polly, a fearless snowmobiler desperate to go pro and break free from her small-town life. Caught between a gambling grandmother, a best friend who runs drugs, and an unexpected pregnancy, Polly’s shot at glory collides with betrayal, violence, and survival. Gritty, dark, and emotionally charged, the film blends the starkness of small-town Canada with the adrenaline of racing, and the raw intensity of a coming-of-age story. Talent to look 17. Tough, with something to prove, athletic and strong, Polly dreams of a future as a pro snowmobiler, if only her crappy ski-doo wouldn’t keep breaking down in the middle of her local races. Living in a trailer with her grandmother Deb in a rough, poverty-stricken northern town, Polly ekes out a precarious existence working at the local bingo hall with Deb (hiding all her earnings from her gambling grandmother), and later doing drug runs with her best friend, Longer.
Talent to look 17, a loyal ride-or-die kinda guy, loving and constant but weak, with a dark side. Longer is a snowmobiler and Polly's best friend. Longer makes a living doing drug/money deliveries for his uncle Jay, which he's carefully hidden away. Longer has been in love with Polly for his whole life, though he's never told her, and he's resigned to being in the friend zone, watching with pain as she goes after Mickey, a man who couldn't care less about her.
