About the musical: Weaving together musical theatre and Vietnamese folk music, folk tales and folk games, ANIVIA follows The Wanderer on his journey to pick up fragments of a broken mirror and assemble them to see himself whole again. ANIVIA was conceptualized by Tan Vu at Buddies In Bad Times (Emerging Creators’ Unit 2022), partially workshopped at Aluna Theatre and presented at Factory Theatre (Caminos 2023). While this dual role is open to artists of all ethnocultural backgrounds, priority will be given to Vietnamese/East-Asian drag artists due to the nature of the Vietnamese folk game Lô Tô. The performer will portray The MC in Act 1 and NGUYỄN ĐẮC VỌNG (A ROYAL GUARD) in Act 2.
Female-presenting, Mezzo Soprano. The only concubine of Emperor Khải Định remembered by history, Lady Hoàng Thị Cúc bore his heir, unlike the other eleven wives who were never touched by The Emperor. She embodies elegance, resilience, and dignity within the opulent yet constrained world of the Nguyễn court.
Male-presenting, Bass. Believes tradition is to be upheld at all costs and dislikes Emperor Khai Dinh’s unconventional approach to running the country. This actor also plays Royal Guard 2.
Vocal ensemble of 4 (Soprano 1 – Soprano 2 – Alto 1 – Alto 2). An ensemble of four voices collectively embody the 11 forgotten wives of Emperor Khải Định — “ghosts in silk,” unseen and untouched by history. They drift through the imperial court as ethereal presences, carrying the elegance, mystery, and silent weight of erased lives.
