About the project: Synopsis: A sultry spy is murdered and a Canadian with a boring life finds himself pursued by a mysterious organization called “The 39 Steps”. Mix a Hitchcock masterpiece with a juicy spy novel, add in nonstop laughs, and you have a fast-paced whodunit for anyone who loves the magic of theatre! This two-time Tony Award-winning treat is packed with over 150 zany characters, an onstage plane crash, handcuffs, missing fingers, and some good old-fashioned romance! Rate: All cast are volunteers. (Male-presenting). Playing age about 40. 1930s suave, stoic hero on the run. Dashing, debonair, intelligent and resourceful. Must have excellent comic timing and a touch of charm. Upper-class British accent.
Female-presenting. Playing age about 40. A chameleon with range and wit. One actor plays 3 characters. Annabella Schmidt — An exotic German secret agent, beautiful and nervous. There is romantic tension between her and Hannay. Pamela — A train passenger, stunningly attractive British ingenue. The progress of her and Hannay’s relationship is a subplot to the main secret agent plot. Margaret — Crofter’s wife with a Scottish accent. Shy, pretty and attracted to Hannay. She helps him to escape.
Plays a variety of characters both male and female throughout. They must be physically agile, able to switch accents, have perfect comedic timing and perform physical comedy. They need to form a brilliant double act.
