About the project: In 1979 upstate New York, a snowed-in house tucked beside an old mill holds a decade of grief—and one sister’s persistent hope. 6 roles

Jacinta GallagherFemale30-49 y.o.All ethnicities

From Ontario, Canada. More comfortable milking cows and mucking out stalls than shopping or gabbing about landing a man; left home because she didn’t fit into the conservative surroundings she was raised in. She can handle the tough stuff, like taking care of and advocating for Enid. Carries some baggage, though, and isn’t thrilled to see Cassie, who seems to have had every opportunity Jacinta never had and threw it away.

Cassandra “Cassie” PopeFemale28-32 y.o.All ethnicities

(She turns 30 in the play) Survivor of childhood trauma, which is revealed in the play. Very smart, attractive, saddest person sweet Gregory has ever met. Adores her sister, Enid, which isn’t always easy. Independent to a fault. Playlist: Beatles, Motown, Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon, Heart, Bonnie Raitt.

Gregory AllenMale30-39 y.o.All ethnicities

A novelties sales manager, favors clothes like those worn by John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever; an only child, grew up with strong women around him: mother, grandmother, aunts in Queens, and he’s proud of his neighborhood, his family, and – as we will learn – himself. He has fallen in love with Cassie, in spite of her excellent wall-building skills. Playlist: Led Zeppelin, The Who, Aerosmith, and the Bee Gees

Enid PopeMale30-39 y.o.All ethnicities

(A few years older than Cassie) Enid has had many labels attached to her, including the currently acceptable “mentally retarded”. Her cognitive development is delayed, probably due to brain injury at birth, but it was 1947 in rural upstate NY, so who knows? Enid expresses traits that a modern audience might associate with autism: she doesn’t regulate her voice for “inside” and “outside”; she perseverates on particular themes, such as dates and times; she is rigid about schedules.

Lorain Farnum-McGillFemale30-39 y.o.All ethnicities

(A few years older than Cassie) Divorced mother of Chloe, cousin to Enid and Cassie. Only child, her mother died when she was 10, so Lorain was shuffled between her home with her depressed father, the Pope’s house, and grandparents. She is a bit of an old lady herself, dressing more conservatively than Cassie: sweater sets, matchy-matchy. She didn’t do very well in school and ended up marrying – very young – a guy who was no prize. Playlist: Peaches & Herb, Air Supply, Seals & Crofts, Toto

Larry ThorntonMale28-32 y.o.All ethnicities

Lawyer, same class at Campbellton High School as Cassie. Very nice guy, had a crush on Cassie back in the day, returned to his small hometown to practice law with his dad. His hair is thinning or is otherwise not super attractive. Playlist: If podcasts were a thing, he’d listen to Pod Save America and true crime.
