Actors Needed for "The Trail to Oregon!" Show
The company is holding auditions for "The Trail to Oregon!" show and looking for performers, please see the details below. ONLY LOCAL TALENT WILL BE CONSIDERED. About the project: This show only has six actors, all of which play more than one character during the show. Each performance, the audience gets the chance to name the family at the beginning of the show, and at the end the audience decides which member of the family dies. All parts require strong comedic acting, and the ability to improvise. This is a true to form ensemble show, and every member of the cast will get their own moments in the show. This is also a show that can be cast with any race, gender identity, appearance, etc. We are more than open to gender bending roles; in the original production the role of the Son was played by a woman. At the end of the day, it’s about finding the best actors for each roles, so feel no fear to be yourself. About the project: Please prepare a 32 bar cut of a musical theatre song that shows off your personality and your vocal range, preferably something comedic. This show is first and foremost a comedy, so directors want to see your unique comedic instinct. They also want to know if you have any improv experience and if you are proficient in any musical instruments, neither of these things are requirements, but they are a plus.
5 roles
High Tenor. The well-meaning patriarch of the family, who, despite his best intentions, gets the family into more trouble than good. He’s easily fooled by salesmen, he’s not the smartest tool in the shed, but he loves his family and will do whatever he can to see them get to Oregon.
Mezzo-soprano. The glue of the family. Nothing would get done in the family without the mother because she is the only one with common sense. She is stern, strict, and stubborn, but she would do anything to make sure her children have a better life than she had. Even if that means dragging them to Oregon by their ear.
Teenager (to be played by an adult.) The oldest child who is looking to be a little rebellious against her mother, who she feels is too strict. She also is looking for a romantic fling on the trail. She loves her family, but she lashes out because feels like she never gets what she wants.
Baritone. Grandpa is the eldest member of the family. He is the father of the family’s mother, and he staunchly disapproves with his daughter’s marriage to the family’s father. Grandpa speaks his mind, even if what he has to say sounds like gibberish. Cletus Jones is the sidekick of McDoon. He is not so bright, and he is not so secretly in love with McDoon.
Tenor. McDoon is the infamous Bandit King, an outlaw that steals from families heading on the trail, and this time he has set his sights on the Daughter and he will do anything to get her. This role also plays every other character in the show that is not in the family. Essentially will be riding a carousel of characters throughout the show.
