About the project: The Fantasticks is a whimsical, romantic, and timeless allegory about two young lovers, their meddling fathers, and the journey from youthful idealism to mature love. Narrated by the mysterious El Gallo, the story follows Matt and Luisa as they fall under the spell of moonlit romance—only to be tested by the harsh light of reality. Through heartbreak, self-discovery, and growth, they come to understand that “without a hurt, the heart is hollow.” Filled with theatrical invention and emotional depth, The Fantasticks is a beloved classic and holds the record as the longest-running musical in American theater history. Rate: All roles are volunteer, however, a small travel stipend will be provided to each actor. Additional info: Performances October 17 – November 9th. Friday, Saturday evenings; Matinee on Sundays. Auditionees should prepare and sing a song from the show. See character list for the song that each character will be asked to sing. Please pick the character that you best identify with. An accompanist will be provided at the audition. Auditions will also consist of reading from the script. Download acting sides and music (please see the attachment) If you would prefer to bring in your own material, you may prepare a song and monologue that best showcase your strengths. The selected song should be 32 bars or approximately one minute in length and reflect the style of the production. Please provide either sheet music or a pre-recorded track. The monologue may be comedic or dramatic. Please be advised that we would prefer to hear materials from the show. Each audition will last 5 – 10 minutes. (The Narrator) Voice: Baritone Audition Song: “Try To Remember” Description: Charismatic, mysterious, and worldly-wise. El Gallo is both the narrator and a participant in the story. He sets events in motion and reflects on life’s bittersweet truths.
(The Boy) Voice: Tenor Audition Song: “I Can See It” Description: Innocent, idealistic, and romantic. He dreams of adventure and true love, but learns about reality and heartbreak.
(The Girl) Voice: Legit Soprano Audition Song: “Much More” Description: Bright, imaginative, dramatic, and somewhat spoiled. She dreams of love and fantasy, longing for her life to be like a fairy tale.
(The Boy’s Father) Voice: Baritone Audition Song: “Never Say No” Description: Matt’s father. Practical, earthy, and enjoys gardening and reverse psychology. He feuds with Bellomy to push the children together.
(The Girl’s Father) Voice: Baritone Audition Song: “Never Say No” Description: Luisa’s father. Also practical and somewhat fussy. He plots with Hucklebee to ensure their children marry.
Voice: Silent Audition Song: None. Actors auditioning for this role will be asked to perform a silent interpretation of a monologue from the show. Description: A non-speaking, highly expressive role. The Mute acts as the wall between the gardens and sets the mood for each scene. The Mute is the invisible narrator of the show and guides all the action. Looking for someone with strong physicality and emotional depth.
(The Old Actor) Audition Song: “Try To Remember” Description: A feeble, dramatic old actor who spouts Shakespeare and relishes the spotlight. He’s part of El Gallo’s hired troupe.
(The Man Who Dies) Audition Song: “Try To Remember” Description: Specializes in dying dramatically – over and over
