5 roles

MannyMale20-49 y.o.Asian

(Filipino) Manny is a man with a good heart, but with a history of impulsive choices. On the run from a dangerous gang, he finds an unlikely refuge posing as a chef in a small-town Chinese restaurant - despite not being Chinese. He loves his mother deeply and connects with her through cooking. He will do anything he can to get through a situation, even if that means pretending to be a “Chinese” chef.

DarrenMale35-56 y.o.All ethnicities

(Non-Asian) All Darren ever wants is to be known as the owner of the most authentic Chinese restaurant in this small town. Despite his good intentions, sometimes he misses the cultural cues. But his charisma and boundless optimism keep his employees in line and customers entertained.

CharlieBoth genders40-56 y.o.Asian

Charlie is a no-nonsense old man with a sharp tongue and even sharper taste. Though he doesn’t speak English, he always makes himself understood - especially when it comes to his culinary opinions. He’s unimpressed by inauthentic Chinese food and would rather be eating lasagna. But he has a keen sense of irony and isn’t afraid to laugh at the absurdity around him, including mistaken identity. Must be fluent in Mandarin or Cantonese.

DavidBoth genders40-56 y.o.All ethnicities

David is Charlie’s longtime friend, translator, and reluctant dining companion. He speaks Mandarin or Cantonese fluently enough to act as Charlie’s voice—but tends to speak for him rather than with him. Blunt and practical, David is the type who would rather keep things moving than get bogged down by opinions, even his own. A natural straight-man to Charlie’s dry wit. Must be comfortable delivering dialogue in both English and Mandarin or Cantonese. Fluency is a strong asset.

ShaneBoth genders20-49 y.o.African-American Latino / Hispanic White / Caucasian Other Middle Eastern Native American Pacific Islander Indian/South Asian

(Non-Asian): Shane is an anxious, inexperienced rookie tasked with finding Manny for the gang—an assignment far above his pay grade. Eager to prove himself, he overcompensates with bravado, but it’s clear he’s in over his head. He doesn’t want violence, but his nerves and confusion spark the very chaos he was hoping to avoid. All he really wants is for everything to blow over in peace.
