A novelist. Bright, sophisticated, articulate, and debonair but somewhat at the mercy of his wives, past and present. His interest in spiritualism for a novel brings Madame Arcati to his home for a séance. Skeptical at first, he becomes a believer when the ghost of his first wife appears—and stays.
Charles’s second wife. Witty and sophisticated, a bit stuffy and predictable. Ruth is a society matron who is deeply concerned for Charles’s sanity when Elvira appears. She tries to restore normalcy.
The ghost of Charles’s first wife. Only Charles can see or hear her. Spirited, outgoing, wild, and carefree in life—and still the same in death. She’s jealous of Ruth and still holds a playful love for Charles.
The eccentric local spiritualist and medium. Elderly but full of energy, she truly communicates with the other world. She is the unintentional “medium” who brings Elvira back. Boisterous, whimsical, and fun.
A friend of the Condomines. Invited to dinner and the séance. Entirely skeptical about the occult, but goes along with it to support Charles’s research.
Dr. Bradman’s wife. Naïve and easily impressed, she is thrilled by the idea of being in the presence of a real medium.
The Condomines’ new maid. Nervous and high-strung, she zips around trying to do everything right and make a good impression.
