7 roles

JEAN SHEPHERD/NARRATORMale18-56 y.o.All ethnicities

With an electric, easily lovable presence, Jean Shepherd is the author of the books this story is based on, as well as the narrator voice heard in the 1983 movie. It is his story, though one he has embellished. On stage, he is a warm, charismatic and engaging storyteller who draws the audience into his magical, nostalgic world. He is omniscient but not overpowering, a good-natured curmudgeon with a deadpan sense of humor.

FRANK PARKER - "THE OLD MAN"Male18-56 y.o.All ethnicities

Gruff and grumbling on the exterior, Ralphie's dad has a good heart. He isn't mushy about it, but he loves his family dearly. He is generally a blue-collar guy who expects the worst out of most situations, but he also fancies himself as quite clever. He is transformed into a true song-and-dance man in his moments of fantasy. Must be a strong singer and a good dancer who isn't afraid to go whole hog for comedic purposes. Vocal range is B b 2 to G4.

SANTAMale18-56 y.o.All ethnicities

A seasonal employee of Higbee's Department Store who is cynical, slightly inebriated, and very unhappy with his job. He looks the part of Santa but underneath is anything but jolly. He gets rid of each kid as fast as he can. Must be a strong comedic actor and singer who is comfortable working with children. Also plays other roles in the Men's Ensemble. Vocal range is B b 2 to F4 (optional B b 4).

MEN'S ENSEMBLEMale18-56 y.o.All ethnicities

5 additional men of all ages to portray the chief elf, delivery man, policeman, fireman, and other ensemble roles. We are seeking a mix of strong singers and dancers who will play a variety of smaller roles in scenes and perform in larger production numbers.

MOTHERFemale30-49 y.o.All ethnicities

Remembered fondly through the haze of years gone by, Ralphie's mom is warm, loving, and a little bit daffy. She is a vibrant woman who is always busy, especially in the kitchen. She is the secret engine that keeps the household together as her husband and boys continually pull her in opposite directions. Must be an excellent singer, a good dancer, and very comfortable with children. Vocal range is G3 to Db 5.

MISS SHIELDSFemale18-56 y.o.All ethnicities

Ralphie's 5th grade teacher, a seemingly stereotypical 1940s educator who is prim and proper, stern when necessary, but in Ralphie's fantasy she transforms into a dynamic, brassy, show-stopping belter and tap-dancing phenomenon! Must be an excellent singer with a strong belt voice, an experienced tap dancer and an actor who can handle comedy AND children! Vocal range is F#3 to D5.

WOMEN'S ENSEMBLEFemale18-56 y.o.All ethnicities

6 additional women to portray Mrs. Schwartz. Flick's mother, nurse, Higbee's elves, dancers, and other ensemble roles. We are seeking a mix of strong singers and dancers who will play a variety of smaller roles in scenes and perform in larger production numbers.
