"Into the Woods" Musical Needs Actors

About the project: SYNOPSIS: Into the Woods is Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s Tony Award-winning musical that cleverly intertwines several Brothers Grimm fairy tales into one unforgettable story. When a Baker and his Wife learn they have been cursed with childlessness by a vengeful Witch, they embark on a quest into the woods to find the magical items needed to break the spell: a cow as white as milk, a cape as red as blood, hair as yellow as corn, and a slipper as pure as gold. Along their journey, they cross paths with Cinderella, desperate to attend the King’s Festival; Jack, who is reluctantly selling his beloved cow; Little Red Riding Hood, on her way to Grandmother’s house; Rapunzel, trapped in a tower; and charming Princes pursuing their own happily-ever-afters. While Act I ends with everyone seemingly achieving their wishes, Act II reveals the consequences of those choices. As a vengeful Giant threatens the kingdom, the characters must face loss, responsibility, and the reality that life is more complicated than fairy tales. At turns funny, poignant, and dark, Into the Woods explores community, parenthood, sacrifice, and the stories we tell ourselves to make sense of the world. Additional info: Looking for MANY talented performers of all ages, backgrounds, and experience levels. What to Prepare: A song that best showcases your voice, in the style of the show (an accompanist will be provided). You will be expected to perform a monologue from the show (provided). Rehearsals: starting August 10th. Rehearsals will typically be held 2–3 times per week, including some weekends, leading up to tech week. Attendance at all technical and dress rehearsals is required. Bring your calendar to auditions for potential conflicts. The Performances are Sept 25, 26, 27, Oct 2, 3, 4 at 7PM and Sept 28 and Oct 5 at 2PM (Actors MUST be available all performance dates). Vocal Range: Baritone/Tenor (A2 – G4). Personality Traits: Earnest, humble, determined, anxious, loyal, emotionally reserved but deeply loving. Character Notes: An everyman who longs to start a family but struggles to communicate and trust. Over the course of the story, he learns the meaning of sacrifice, fatherhood, and community. He carries much of the narrative’s emotional weight.
Vocal Range: Mezzo-Soprano (G3 – F5). Personality Traits: Witty, practical, resourceful, grounded, yearning, conflicted, compassionate. Character Notes: The heart of the story, she is determined to make her wish come true but questions what she truly wants. She provides humor, warmth, and poignancy.
Vocal Range: Mezzo-Soprano with belt (G3 – F5). Personality Traits: Fierce, commanding, sardonic, protective, tormented, ultimately vulnerable. Character Notes: A complex figure—both villain and tragic mother. She drives much of the action. Her transformation (physical and emotional) is central to the show’s themes.
Vocal Range: Soprano (B3 – G5). Personality Traits: Kind, reflective, indecisive, curious, perceptive, quietly strong. Character Notes: Unlike the classic fairy-tale heroine, Cinderella is thoughtful and searching for her own path. She evolves from a dreamer to a woman who takes charge of her destiny.
Vocal Range: Tenor (B2 – G4). Personality Traits: Naive, energetic, impulsive, tender-hearted, loyal. Character Notes: A boy on the cusp of growing up, whose reckless decisions have serious consequences. Must balance childlike wonder with believable growth.
Vocal Range: Mezzo-Soprano (B3 – F5). Personality Traits: Bold, cheeky, precocious, fearless, occasionally bratty, ultimately brave. Character Notes: A young girl discovering that the world is more complicated—and dangerous—than she imagined. Comedic timing is critical.
Vocal Range: Baritone/Tenor (B2 – F4). Personality Traits: Charming, arrogant, dramatic, entitled, oblivious. Character Notes: A self-absorbed fairy-tale Prince whose relentless pursuit of Cinderella masks his shallow nature. He believes in romance more than reality. His comedic duet “Agony” highlights his over-the-top persona.
Vocal Range: Baritone/Tenor (B2 – E4). Personality Traits: Sly, predatory, seductive, theatrical, menacingly funny. Character Notes: A cunning predator who tempts Little Red Riding Hood off her path. This role is often played as darkly comedic with hints of danger.
Vocal Range: Soprano (B3 – A5). Personality Traits: Innocent, sheltered, emotional, anxious, fragile. Character Notes: Trapped by the Witch in a tower, Rapunzel is torn between her longing for freedom and her fear.
Vocal Range: Tenor (C3 – E4). Personality Traits: Romantic, vain, overly dramatic, impulsive. Character Notes: Similar to Cinderella’s Prince but more sensitive and prone to weeping.
Vocal Range: Spoken or Baritone (G2 – E4). Personality Traits: Wry, observant, articulate, objective, engaging. Character Notes: The Narrator guides the audience through the story, maintaining an air of authority and detachment until he is drawn into the action himself.
Vocal Range: Baritone (G2 – E4). Personality Traits: Haunted, regretful, eccentric, tender, sorrowful. Character Notes: A shadowy figure revealed to be the Baker’s estranged father. Carries the emotional depth of the story’s themes about legacy and forgiveness.
