She meets a British officer and marries in order to flourish, see the world and help her family. Two husbands later, she meets a handsome young man on a ship. He is a student at Cambridge, a poet, and they fall in love. She starts an affair that takes her to the Burma with her new entrenchment, where he is hired to teach. They eventually marry. Back in London, this young woman is bored with stability and embarks on an affair with a married English poet. This goes on for a while, she becomes pregnant and loses the baby. The cause of this affair is the demise of the fragile but feisty (also acclaimed poet) wife of the poet, who struggles for self-worth in the face of this public humiliation. It ends with the tragic loss of life for the poet's wife and 6 years later, the same tragedy for this lonely, wandering woman who always felt an exile, and failed to secure love.
