About the project: SYNOPSIS: Now celebrating its 60th anniversary, the final collaboration between Rodgers & Hammerstein was destined to become the world’s most beloved musical. Featuring a trove of cherished songs, including “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” “My Favorite Things,” “Do-Re-Mi,” “Sixteen Going on Seventeen” and the title number, The Sound of Music won the hearts of audiences worldwide, earning five Tony Awards and five Oscars. The inspirational story, based on the memoir of Maria Augusta Trapp, follows an ebullient postulant who serves as governess to the seven children of the imperious Captain von Trapp, bringing music and joy to the household. But as the forces of Nazism take hold of Austria, Maria and the entire von Trapp family must make a moral decision. Additional info: Please prepare a song of no more than one minute. You may sing from the show. Bring your music in individual sheets, taped side-by-side, in the correct key, with an accompaniment line, not just the vocal line. An accompanist will be provided. Callbacks: Sunday, August 10, 2025 by invitation. Invitations to callbacks will be sent via email Saturday evening. Not being invited to callbacks does not mean that you are not cast. All auditioners will be contacted within a week of auditions. General rehearsal schedule: Sun 1-4 pm, M-Th 6-9 pm, some Saturdays. Full company rehearsals begin: Sunday, October 5. Vocal Range: Soprano B5-C4, Vocal Technique: Belting, Yodeling, Legit, Dance: Moves Well. A postulant at Nonnberg Abbey, she’s young, energetic, and loves music. She initially struggles to fit in at the convent, but her free spirit and kindness ultimately win her the respect of the Mother Abbess. Strong Singer/Actor/Storyteller.
Vocal Range: Baritone D5 to F#2/Gb2, Vocal Technique: Legit, Dance: Moves Well. A retired naval captain, he’s stern and disciplined, but he’s also kind-hearted and protective of his children. Initially resistant to Maria’s influence, she gradually melts his hard exterior.
Vocal Range: Bass-Baritone, F4-D3 Vocal Technique: Legit, Dance: Moves Well. A Theatrical agent and first secretary of Education and Culture – a personal friend of the Captain and referred to as “Uncle Max” to the children. He is clever, charming, witty, and quite pushy to get what he wants. Max has a humorous personality.
Vocal Range: Soprano, G#5 Ab 5-B3 Vocal Technique: Operatic, Legit, Dance: Moves Well. An inspirational leader for all the Nuns at the Abby. Mother Abbess is a true big-hearted mother figure who is loved, adored, and respected. She has a bit of hidden spunk.
Vocal Range: Mezzo Soprano, F5-D4 Vocal Technique: Legit, Dance: Moves Well. A very wealthy widow who is president of her late Husband’s corporation. Elsa is a very elegant, sophisticated, well-educated, upper-class woman. Clever and Canny, she is very much into making a good social arrangement.
(Must play 17). Vocal Range: Baritone, Eb4-D3 Vocal Technique: Legit, Dance: Moves Well. Rolf is the telegram delivery boy-friend of Liesl. He comes off as very pleasant and self-boasting. Rolf can be somewhat aggressive in a gentle way. We find out that his role model is Hitler and his ambition is the Nazi regime. He seems to know an enormous amount about what is going on, and he relishes in his spying tactics.
(Must play 16). Vocal Range: Mezzo Soprano G5-C4, Vocal Technique: Legit, Dance: Moves Well. The eldest, a blossoming young lady with a crush on Rolf. She is innocent, naïve, coy, flirtatious, and headstrong. She is maternal and cares very deeply for her siblings.
Vocal Range: Mezzo Soprano, E5 – B3 Vocal Technique: Legit, Dance: Moves Well. A nun who is the Mistress of Novices. She does not think that headstrong, free-spirited postulants belong at the Abby. She is a no-nonsense type, officious and very strict. She is not a supporter of Maria. A killjoy, self-righteous, straight-laced, and a bit of a prude.
Vocal Range: Mezzo Soprano, E5-B3 Vocal Technique: Legit, Dance: Moves Well. A nun who is the Mistress of Postulants. She is kind and understanding. She is a supporter of Maria. Sister Margaretta is positive, encouraging, and has a great sense of humor with good comic timing.
Vocal Range: Mezzo Soprano, E5-B3 Vocal Technique: Legit, Dance: Moves Well. A nun who always stays in line. She is very dutiful and kind. She would rather take the middle road to avoid controversy.
Vocal Range: Non-Singing, Vocal Technique: Spoken, Dance: Non-Dancing. Originally a protector of Captain von Trapp in the navy. Franz is now retired into the position of valet, which he carries out with somber efficiency. He is humorless and appears harmless, however we discover that he is secretly plotting with the Nazi Party Anschluss.
Vocal Range: Non-Singing, Vocal Technique: Spoken, Dance: Non-Dancing. The von Trapp Family Housekeeper, Frau Schmidt does her job efficiently but without affection. She is strong and somewhat dominating. She has been with the family a very long time. She dislikes the way the Captain uses his whistle to call her; it affects her dignity. She is a reliable member of the household and is respected by all.
Vocal Range: Non-Singing, Vocal Technique: Spoken, Dance: Non-Dancing A district governor appointed by the Nazi Regime to prepare the Anschluss. He is overbearing, arrogant, self-important, and pompous. Stern and unsmiling, a typical Nazi official whose primary concern is that everyone follows the Nazi Regime.
Vocal Range: Non-Singing, Vocal Technique: Spoken, Dance: Non-Dancing. An important figure in the Austrian Navy and appears to be much respected by Captain von Trapp. He has obviously agreed to be part of the new Regime in Germany. He arrives to collect Captain von Trapp and bring him to Berlin.
Baron & Baroness Elberfeld: married couple. Vocal Range: Non-Singing, Vocal Technique: Spoken, Dance: Non-Dancing. Neighbors of the von Trapp’s and violently opposed of the takeover of their beloved country by Nazi Germany. Both can double as other roles in the ensemble.
