Alison's father. He is a teacher, mortician, veteran, intellectual, handyman self-described country boy and closeted homosexual. Bruce is vital, fit, precise, dark, cold and repressed. Alison's mother. She is a talented actor who in her 20's gave up her chance at a career to start a stable family life. Helen can seem severe and distant to her children because inside she is trying to figure out how to be their mother and not lose herself in the process.
