About the project: “Inspired by a true story…BRIGHT STAR tells a sweeping tale of love and redemption set against the rich backdrop of the American South in the 1920s and ’40s.” Alice is an all-about-business editor with a hidden past. Twenty-one years ago, Alice and her sweetheart, Jimmy Ray fell in love and got pregnant. Despite their excitement to start their life together, their fathers intervene and take their child. Jimmy Ray finds out that his father killed the baby. Jimmy Ray runs away from Alice, unable to burden her with the truth. Two decades later, Billy has come home from war. He is determined to become a published author. His journey leads him to Alice’s office where he gets a job. When Alice travels home with Billy to research a story, she discovers the truth that her baby is alive. Billy is her long lost son. Additional info: Prepare a memorized 30-45 second monologue and 16-32 bars of a musical theater song. Bring sheet music for the accompanist or a karaoke track. You cannot sing a capella for your audition. Prepare to learn a short choreography combination. Wear comfortable clothes you can move in. Callbacks will be held on July 12th. Female, Mezzo-soprano Alice is an editor of a southern literary magazine; intelligent, attractive, professional – but with an air of melancholy. Young Alice is rebellious, high-spirited, adventurous – looking to break out of small-town life and experience the world. She must be a very strong singer and comfortable in folk and bluegrass styles.
Tenor A young soldier returning home from WWII; an aspiring young writer; fresh, open, optimistic, charming, and a little naïve.
Tenor Billy’s father. A widower. Spry, good looking. Kind hearted, if a bit lonely.
Soprano A small-town bookstore owner; a childhood friend of Billy’s who now harbors romantic feelings towards him.

Baritone The Mayor of Zebulon; a political and financial powerbroker – distinguished, an imposing and controlling presence; has a genuine interest in protecting his son’s future and his family name, but in doing so, is ultimately pushed to a point of extreme and irrevocable cruelty.
Tenor Young Jimmy Ray is Mayor Dobbs’ son and young Alice’s beau; handsome, boyishly charming, well-built and intelligent; from a family of wealth and power and is being groomed by his father for a similar future in the family business; an independent thinker who is not afraid to stand up to his father for what he believes in; he has a sense of personal responsibility and morality as well as a deep reserve of passion and emotion.
