7 roles
Main Character A shy, awkward proofreader for a science fiction magazine in London. Deeply self-conscious, heartbroken by his wife’s infidelity and illness. Pretends to be a foreigner who doesn’t speak English, leading to comic and eventually heroic developments. His emotional growth — from timid mouse to brave leader — is the heart of the story. Estuary/Received Pronunciation British accent required, bookish and proper
Charlie’s friend A British army demolition expert. Brash, cheerful, and resourceful. He invents the “foreigner” ruse to protect Charlie and later helps orchestrate the defeat of the villains. Provides comic relief and serves as Charlie’s champion. Requires a Cockney accent, streetwise and working-class
Owner of the fishing lodge Elderly, sweet, motherly, and very gullible. Dreamed of traveling to exotic places (like Atlanta!), so she's thrilled to host an actual "foreigner." Becomes one of Charlie’s strongest supporters. Requires a soft, warm Southern accent (Georgia, light rural)
Guest at the lodge Young, attractive, sharp-witted but vulnerable. Recently engaged to David Marshall Lee, but has doubts about him. Cares deeply for her brother, Ellard, and supports Charlie. Inherits a fortune but is manipulated by David. Requires a more refined Southern accent – polished but with enough “Southern-ness” to be believable for a young heiress
Catherine’s younger brother Thought by others (and himself) to be "dull" or "slow," but actually just shy and misunderstood. Forms a deep bond with Charlie when Charlie pretends to learn English from him. His character arc (growing in self-esteem) mirrors Charlie’s. Requires a gentle, slightly slower Southern accent. Should sound authentic but not “dumb”; his simplicity is emotional, not linguistic
Antagonist Catherine’s seemingly charming fiancé. Hypocritical, secretly racist, and villainous. Plans to use Catherine’s inheritance to fund a KKK headquarters at the lodge. His true nature is revealed slowly, providing tension. Requires a very polished, “Good ol’ boy” Southern accent—charming on the surface but capable of sounding threatening underneath
Secondary villain, ally of David A local property inspector and openly racist bully. Member of the Ku Klux Klan. Tries to intimidate Betty into selling the lodge and takes an active role in the plot against the protagonists. Requires a rough, harsher Southern accent. Should sound unpolished—a little angry or sneering, which fits his racist and bullying persona
