About the project: Set on Chicago’s South Side, Lorraine Hansberry's celebrated play concerns the divergent dreams and conflicts in three generations of the Younger family: son Walter Lee, his wife Ruth, his sister Beneatha, his son Travis, and matriarch Lena. When her deceased husband’s insurance money comes through, Mama Lena dreams of moving to a new home and a better neighborhood in Chicago. Walter Lee, a chauffeur, has other plans: buying a liquor store and being his own man. Beneatha dreams of medical school. Hansberry's portrait of one family’s struggle to retain dignity in a harsh and changing world is a searing and timeless document of hope and inspiration. Rate There is no pay. 35 year-old chauffeur who has a young son, Travis, with his wife Ruth. Family lives in small apartment with his sister and mother. He is a dreamer who wants to be rich and devises plans to acquire wealth with his friends.
Mama’s daughter and Walter’s sister, this 20 year-old attends college and is better educated than the rest of family. Dreams of being a doctor and struggles to determine her identity of a well-educated black woman.
The matriarch of the family, she is religious, moral, and maternal. She wants to use her late husband’s insurance money to put a down payment on a house with a backyard to fulfill her dream for her family to move up in the world.
Walter’s wife and Travis’ mother, she takes care of their small apartment and even though her marriage to Walter has problems she hopes to rekindle their love. She is 30 but seems older. Constantly fighting poverty and domestic troubles, she continues to be an emotionally strong woman.
A Nigerian student in love with Beneatha. He is very proud of his African heritage. He proposed and hopes she will go back to Nigeria with him.
A wealthy African-American man who courts Beneatha. She dislikes his willingness to submit to white culture and forget his African heritage. He challenges the thoughts and feelings of other Black people with his arrogance.
Man who arrives from the Clayborne Park Improvement Association and offers the family a deal to reconsider moving into an all-white neighborhood.
One of Walters partners in the liquor store plan. He appears to be mentally slow.
