About the project: Dylan is a photography student struggling to connect with his family and face the emotional fallout of his father’s devastating accident. While readying the family house for sale, he discovers a box of his father’s old photographs — a quiet, powerful glimpse into the man he used to be. Through their shared love of photography, Dylan begins to process the pain his family never talks about. In creating something new, he finds a way back to the people he thought he’d lost. A quiet, observant, and talented photographer. Dylan uses the camera as a barrier between himself and the world around him. He can often act selfishly due to his emotional immaturity and unresolved hurt. He has a difficult relationship with his family, especially his mother.
The youngest in a fractured family, Layla has become its quiet emotional center. While others retreat or fall apart, Layla shows up — steady, thoughtful, and instinctively attuned to the needs of those around her. She notices the small things, often anticipating what others need before they ask. Her resilience comes from growing up too fast, learning early how to hold space for others even when no one holds it for her.
Jane is a woman shaped by loss and hardened by responsibility. After her husband’s accident, she was forced to raise their children alone. Hardworking and fiercely practical, she’s spent years surviving — not healing. Now in her 50s, Jane longs for a fresh start, seeking comfort and stability with a new partner. What she truly wants is her family to support and understand her.
Melvin is the father of Dylan and Layla. He suffered a serious workplace injury resulting in permanent paralysis. Though he can no longer speak or move, he’s still very much present in the lives of his family members.
A beautiful young woman in love, excited new home owner who dreams about her future family with Mel. (Will be shooting all her scenes on 16 mm film).
ADDITIONAL CHARACTER. A quiet, happy man, he works hard and in his spare time, is a passionate amateur photographer. He is looking forward to his new home and life with Jane. (Will be shooting all his scenes on 16mm film!)
ADDITIONAL CHARACTER. Jane’s new husband, Dean is a kind-hearted man who brings a sense of calm and stability to her life. He’s not fully immersed in the family’s complicated history, offering a refreshing sense of distance from the drama that has defined Jane’s past.
ADDITIONAL CHARACTER. Carol is the nosy aunt who never misses a family event and never knows when to stop talking. She means well — at least in her own mind — but her bluntness, invasive questions, and sharp tongue often leave people bracing for impact.
