About the project: Blood Brothers, the musical, is set in London 1960’s -1980’s and revolves around twin boys Mickey and Edward. With seven older siblings, their mother, Mrs. Johnstone, cannot afford to keep both babies and she agrees to give one away to the wealthy Mrs. Lyons. Separated at birth, they are brought up in completely different environments within the city. When they are seven years old, Mickey and Edward meet each other for the first time and realize they share a birthday. They immediately become best friends and blood brothers but are still unaware of their true relationship. They stay close as they grow up and the bond between them remains strong, despite both being in love with Mickey’s neighbor and friend, Linda. However, the difference in their backgrounds soon threatens their friendship and pulls them in different directions. Mrs. Johnstone is finally forced to reveal that Mickey and Edward are twins, ultimately leading to their tragic deaths. Additional info: Rehearsals will be 2-3 weeknights and every Sunday in Boston. The Narrator observes and comments on the action of the play, and at times steps into the story as various characters. An extraordinary, versatile actor with an explosive singing voice and ability to bring a dark and ominous tone to the plot. Upper class wife, from a world of privilege, she is desperate to have a baby and convinces Mrs. Johnstone to give her one of her unborn twins. Her devotion to Edward develops into an unhealthy obsession to protect him from the truth of his past, with tragic results. Upper class British accent. Alto. Proper Gentleman from the upper class. Is tricked into thinking his wife has had a child while he was on an extended business trip. A wealthy businessman, Mr. Lyons feels affection for his wife Mrs. Lyons and his son Edward, but is too oblivious and self-important to realize that Edward is in fact not his biological child. As Mrs. Lyons’ mental health deteriorates, however, Mr. Lyons becomes increasingly alarmed. Throughout the play, he is paternalistic and preoccupied.
Michael 'Mickey' Johnstone, Fraternal twin brother to Edward, Mickey is raised by his real mother in relative poverty. A good-natured and well-meaning kid, he turns to a life of crime when he has trouble providing for his family as an adult. This leads to a period of dark depression, from which Mickey never fully recovers. Must be an amazing physical actor and convincingly play Mickey over the course of 23 years. Fraternal twin brother to Mickey, Edward is given away by his mother to the well-to-do Lyons family. He attends the best boarding schools, eventually becoming a respected politician. An earnest and sheltered kid, he is delighted to befriended Mickey and learn how to let loose and get in trouble. Linda begins the musical as a tomboyish young girl, but quickly morphs into an object of desire for both twin brothers. At the beginning of her adolescence, she only has eyes for Mickey, even telling him she loves him long before their first kiss.
