About the project: Vanya and Sonia live in their family home, located in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. They have spent much of their adult lives looking after their parents, and neither has ever gotten a job – any income they have is currently provided by their sister Masha, who owns the house and pays the bills. Vanya and Sonia spend a good portion of each day reflecting on their lost chances and bemoaning their rather Chekhovian lot in life. The only other resident of the house is their cleaning woman, Cassandra – she, like her namesake, is prone to making dire prophecies that no one believes. This static environment is disrupted when Masha returns home, bringing with her a flurry of drama, an endless litany of insecurity, and a much younger lover named Spike. Sonia's resentments and Masha's competitive nature begin to spark arguments, and while Vanya tries to keep the peace, he is repeatedly distracted by the preening Spike. Another interloper arrives, the neighbor's pretty niece Nina, an aspiring actress who provokes envy in Masha, lust in Spike, and sympathy in Vanya. Additional info: For your audition, actors should prepare a 2-minute monologue of their choice. This monologue should showcase your emotional range and – most importantly – highlight your personal connection to the language of the piece you have selected. Your monologue can be from any play, from any period, from any genre. Pre-selected monologues will also be available.
