Macbeth is a highly emotional man, passionate about his wife and his ambition. He gains everything he desires at the cost of everything he is. A warrior, but also a politician. Needs to be shown making choices all along the way–audience should know that this story could have played out very differently had he chosen differently. Will be choreographed for fights and intimacy.
Lady Macbeth is ambitious but not a villain–and definitely not someone who has resorted to murder before. This is very much her first murder-rodeo. Struggles with indecision and guilt. She is initially stronger and more focused on the throne than Macbeth, but their positions reverse. Will be choreographed for intimacy.
These witches are malevolent spirits who feed on death, chaos, and destruction for its own sake. Death swells their numbers and makes them more powerful: Whenever a character dies, they join the witches. The witches will interact with the audience and will be onstage most of the time. Will be choreographed for movement.
A close friend of Macbeth’s, Banquo is the good guy, the “normal one,” the audience surrogate. At the same time, he is a real person with desires and flaws, not a moralizing saint. Will be choreographed for fights.
Macduff is a man who lives by his principles more than his affections, as evidenced by his going off to lead a campaign while leaving his family unprotected. He is the first to oppose Macbeth as an unlawful ruler. Will be choreographed for fights and intimacy.
The son of Duncan–initially too young to take over the throne. The lawful leader and breaker of the cycle of violence. Smart, committed to self-preservation as well as doing the right thing. Will be choreographed for fights.
A good ruler who has become too old and vulnerable to maintain his grip on power in a treacherous, violent atmosphere. He and Malcolm symbolize legitimate authority in the world of the play.
A noble in the Scottish court, functioning primarily as a diplomat and messenger.
Young and idealistic noble in the court who ultimately comes to oppose Macbeth. Will be choreographed for fights.
Older and more cynical noble in the court who ultimately comes to oppose Macbeth. Will be choreographed for fights
(combined role) Scotland: The Next Generation. The sons of Banquo and Macduff. Fleance escapes with whereabouts unknown; Macduff Jr. is murdered. Needs a youthful-looking actor who can make both characters distinct. Will be choreographed for fights.
Domestic and protective, with a child she will do anything for. (Contrasted with the Macbeths who have no such attachments.) Will be choreographed for intimacy.
A drunken porter who provides badly needed comic relief.
There are a variety of smaller roles that may be doubled. Ensemble members will understudy main roles
