Production of "Paper Chase" Seeks Performers
ONLY LOCAL TALENT WILL BE ACCEPTED. Casting performers for a Toronto Fringe comedy play "Paper Chase". More details are below. Abput the play: Synopsis: When idealistic but scattered Erik, a wannabe therapist, learns he’s being deported from Canada in thirty days, he scrambles to find a way to stay. With no legal work permit and mounting desperation, Erik hatches increasingly harebrained schemes: from selling magic mushrooms to seniors to slinging MDMA at raves, while hiding it all from his best friends. Fast, funny, and painfully human, Paper Chase is a battle cry for every immigrant who ever got lost in the system, and fought like hell to stay anyway. This is all based on the playwright's own 1,978 day journey (but who's counting) to obtain his Permanent Residency to stay in the country. Minus the drug dealing. Rate: This is a completely self-funded theatre show with the director volunteering their time. There's a small amount of compensation available, plus a percentage of the profit share of the Toronto Fringe Ticket Sales. Additional information: The performance will take place in the first two weeks of July. Theme: The experience we are trying to deliver is what it's like to have an institution have absolute control over your life, while simultaneously being absolutely indifferent. That's what Immigration is. Rehearsal + Performances Performers must be available for all performances and technical rehearsals to be considered. Rehearsals will take place outside of office hours during the month of June, with some flexibility. Technical Rehearsals: June 28 - 29, 2025. Exact timing TBD. Performances: Wed 2nd Jul 8:00 PM Thu 3rd Jul 9:45 PM Sat 5th Jul 5:45 PM Tue 8th Jul 10:00 PM Wed 9th Jul 7:30 PM Fri 11th Jul 10:00 PM Sat 12th Jul 4:00 PM. If interested, please apply.
3 roles
Male-identified. From the outside, you’d think Lagos is the typical frat-bro. But he’s a real charmer and cares more about people than his Jeep Wrangler. If Thad Castle from Blue Mountain State went to improv and a Chappell Roan concert. He has a family member who’s an addict, so he is very opposed to drug dealing. Even if it’s non-addictive. For him, it’s all the same. He loves looking at the bottom of a bottle of Crown Royal, though.
Male-identified. Moe is an international student who has come to Canada in the past two years. He’s a full-of-life true optimist but seeks stability wherever he can find it: his studies, his friends, and his (completely absent) love life. His parents are loaded, but he doesn’t let it show. His English is good, but he still literally translates some of his native sayings like “swatting two flies with one slap” instead of saying “killing two birds with one stone”.
Female-identified. Dolores is a naughty granny who has spent her life fighting The Man. Now, she runs a covert drug-dealing operation from the safety of her retirement home. If the Oracle from the Matrix were a retired gangster. We are willing to cast someone younger who could realistically play someone who would live in a retirement home.
