About the play: "The Witch of Edmonton" is a Jacobian play from the 1600's originally written by William Rowley, Thomas Dekker, and John Ford. The play is framed around the real life trial and execution of Elizabeth Sawyer. It is considered one of if not the most famous witch trial to have occurred in the UK. While the original play is set in the parish of Edmonton, we have written a modern revival for Fringe 2025 setting it in our very own city of Edmonton complete with a Jacobian style set depicting the streets of Whyte Ave, and a proscenium arch of Old Strathcona not to mention a devilish Coyote puppet named Tom. This show contains coarse language, depictions of self-harm, suicide, violence against women, and blood. A non-speaking role. She is a woman who after suffering years of abuse at the hands of her husband, kills herself at the top of the play. The actor playing Ann will also play several of the ensemble characters throughout the play.
A wealthy businessman, who after getting Winnifred Carter pregnant, marries her off to his subordinate. He is domineering and quite charismatic. The actor plays several townspeople as well.
A man equally as domineering as Arthur Clarington, but thinks of himself as a kind and reasonable man.
The witch herself. She is fierce, outspoken, but also quite tender. At the death of her friend Ann, she throws off society's expectations and chooses to embrace her status as a witch.
He is a hopeless and stupid man. He commits bigamy at the behest of his employer, only to fall further and further into desperation as the play goes on.
She is the first wife of Frank Thorney. She is murdered by Frank in an attempt to cover his tracks. She is in one scene and therefore the actor playing her will also play several town people as well.
She is a desperate woman, who after finding out she is pregnant is cast off by her lover and is married to Frank Thorney.
Elizabeth’s familiar. He is represented in puppet form and appears throughout the play to offer guidance to Elizabeth.
