About the project: In 1985 Seattle’s NME (groove metal band) were entrenched in a scene that would soon give rise to Sound Garden, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, and Alice in Chains. Black metal pioneers the band, led by front man Kurt Struebing, had just released their debut album ‘Unholy Death’ and were making plans for a tour until their dreams were obliterated by an unspeakable crime. Unhinged by hallucinogens, suffering from intense paranoia and in the grips of a psychotic episode, Struebing murdered his adoptive mother with a hatchet and scissors in an effort to prove that she was actually a robot. The tragedy stunned their contemporaries and silenced the band’s ambient, primordial pounding that was resonating with a fan base of punks and metal heads alike. Just 21 years-old Struebing was handed a twelve-year prison sentence and spent much of his incarceration in the psych ward while his bandmates struggled to reconcile the monster the media blamed for the tragedy with the bandmate and friend they knew. Despite the objections of those closest to them they put friendship and forgiveness over fear, nurturing Kurt back to health and eventually back to the stage. Making music together again healed their sorrow but failed to prevent Kurt’s mysterious death just shy of his 40th birthday.
