Sixties, a tough businessman, uncompromising and high status.
Hakon Werle's son. The force of change in the play – fiery, uncompromising, with a dangerous charm and piercing sense of righteousness. Edgy.
Sixties, a broken former military man who has been reduced to a inhibited life after being accused of legal wrongdoing. A kind man with traces of being a soldier.
Old Ekdal's son. A man of high hopes and bold dreams but crippled by a sense of social inferiority. A dreamer, emotional and highly strung. Heartfelt, determined yet carrying a vulnerability.
Hjalmar Ekdal's wife. Capable, with a deep strength. A passionate mother and matriarch who is determined to defend her life and its complex foundations.
The housekeeper and fiancée of Hakon Werle. Late fifties/early sixties. A big presence – practical and of the countryside - but now enjoying her elevated status. There is an edge of glamour to her and of, finally, making good by her imminent marriage.
A doctor. Late fifties/early sixties. Forthright, jovial, and unafraid to speak his mind. He was once tied romantically to Mrs. Sorby. Now the only one brave enough to stand up to Gregers.
