Forced to care for himself, an entirely unexpected encounter between OLIVER and BELLA brings the sense of connection he had been seeking from his father. THE ONES WE CALL FAMILY is a project where feeling and vulnerability take center stage. The film has little dialogue, with a strong emphasis on the unspoken emotions between the characters. Any dialogue that is present serves more as a guideline than something to be followed word for word. Now living on welfare and drowning in alcohol and gambling, Brian's life revolves around his past memories and a love for soccer that no longer has a place in his reality. His harsh and often volatile behavior impacts everyone around him, especially his young son, Oliver.
Jeffrey runs a small, local snackbar he inherited from his father. Independent and easygoing, he’s passionate about soccer and analogue music but takes the most pride in his business. He knows Brian from attending soccer matches together, and their shared love of the sport has kept them close. Over time, Jeffrey has become familiar with Brian and Ollie through their visits to his snackbar.
Bella is a young woman who learned to get by in a world that didn’t offer her much. After losing her parents at a young age, she had to grow up fast, learning to handle life without the emotional support most people get. Without a mother to guide her, Bella became independent, figuring out how to deal with relationships in a practical way. Over time, she started to see intimacy as just a part of life, something necessary but lacking the deeper connections she had once hoped for.
