Performers Required for "Oliver!" Musical
"Oliver!" musical needs actors. ONLY LOCAL TALENT WILL BE CONSIDERED. See the breakdown below. About the project: Synopsis: Bringing Charles Dickens’ beloved novel to life, Lionel Bart’s Oliver! takes audiences on a wild adventure through Victorian England. Join young, orphaned Oliver Twist as he navigates the London’s underworld of theft and violence, searching for a home, a family, and - most importantly - for love. When Oliver is picked up on the street by a boy named the Artful Dodger, he is welcomed into a gang of child pickpockets led by the conniving, but charismatic, Fagin. When Oliver is falsely accused of a theft he didn’t commit, he is rescued by a kind and wealthy gentleman, to the dismay of Fagin’s violent sidekick, Bill Sikes. Caught in the middle is the warm-hearted Nancy, who is trapped under Bill’s thumb, but desperate to help Oliver, with tragic results. With spirited, timeless songs like “As Long as He Needs Me,” “Food, Glorious Food,” and “Where Is Love,” Oliver! is a musical classic. 20 roles
Vocal range top: F4, Vocal range bottom: A2 Fagin is the eccentric old thief who runs a gang of pickpockets in the backstreets of London. Heavily egotistical, his desires to be rich and loved by all are fulfilled by his crew. He manipulates, lies ,and steals so he can survive, yet is his blackened heart beyond redemption? He does not consider himself evil, yet his actions always come as a result of pure selfishness and a desire to save his own skin.
Vocal range top: E5, Vocal range bottom: F3 A victim of emotional and physical abuse at the hands of the man she believes she loves, poor Nancy is our tragic heroine. To survive, she has had to sink low into the company of criminals and lowlifes, which she has come to accept as her life. She gets by on what little she has and pretends to herself that she is happy. The cracks inevitably start to show however, and Nancy struggles with uncertainty and questions of betrayal.
Vocal range top: D4, Vocal range bottom: A2 Sykes is a brutal, cruel, and ruthless criminal. He treats Nancy as a possession and only seems motivated by the money he can make and the pain he can inflict. He gets enjoyment from the fear his reputation has inflicted, and is angered by the change that Oliver’s presence seems to bring about in the world he believes he controls.
Vocal range top: Ab4, Vocal range bottom: C3 Mr. Bumble is the beadle of the workhouse that Oliver is brought up in. Rather dim and self-centered, he only sees as far as his next extravagant meal and his courting of the equally vile Widow Corney. He is creepy, bulbous, and salacious.
Vocal range top: F5, Vocal range bottom: C4 The matron of the workhouse. She is hypocritical, callous and materialistic. She allows Mr. Bumble to court her simply because of the monetary improvements it would bring her.
Vocal range top: G5, Vocal range bottom: Ab3 Nancy’s friend, who may also have worked for Fagin. She is still a little naïve and is yet to see the true harshness of life. Lovely singing and acting should portray her innocence, as a contrast to Nancy. Good mover with Cockney accent. Will be included in ensemble scenes.
Vocal range top: F4, Vocal range bottom: C3 The undertaker who buys Oliver to work in the funeral home. Sinister and malevolent. A character singer and actor required with a mild Cockney accent. Some movement.
Vocal range top: F5, Vocal range bottom: C4 The undertaker’s wife, who matches her husband in character. She has no qualms about leaving a young child to sleep amongst coffins. A character singer and actor. Some movement.
The Undertaker’s apprentice, who may have also come from Workhouse. He feels threatened by, dislikes, and torments Oliver. He bullies Oliver about his mother and enjoys a flirtatious relationship with Charlotte. Cockney accent. Will be included in ensemble scenes.
The Sowerberry’s daughter who is attracted to Noah. She is also unkind to Oliver and encourages Noah’s bullying. Cockney accent. Will be included in ensemble scenes.
A kind, upper-class gentleman who we eventually discover is Oliver’s grandfather. We must see the element of regret that he once ‘lost’ a daughter and then the joy at finding his grandson. Depending on casting, the actor may appear in ensemble scenes.
Upper class, friend of Mr. Brownlow. He assesses Oliver's condition at the beginning of Act II, deeming him fit to go outside. Depending on casting, the actor may appear in ensemble scenes.
Vocal range top: B4, Vocal range bottom: C4 A housekeeper who works for Mr. Brownlow. Warm and caring personality. Depending on casting, the actor may appear in ensemble scenes.
An older pauper. Depending on casting, the actor may appear in ensemble scenes.
