Singing Audition for "Seussical" Play
Singers and performers needed for "Seussical" Musical. Please see the details below. ONLY LOCAL TALENT WILL BE ACCEPTED. About the project: The Cat in the Hat tells the story of Horton, an elephant who discovers a speck of dust that contains the Whos, including Jojo, a Who child sent off to military school for thinking too many “thinks.” Horton faces a double challenge: not only must he protect the Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers, but he must guard an abandoned egg, left in his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. Although Horton faces ridicule, danger, kidnapping, and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him. Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family, and community are challenged and emerge triumphant. Additional info: Please prepare 32 bars (under 2 minutes) of a character-driven song in the style of the show. Callbacks on March 23rd, 1:00-5:00 PM. The Cat is the essence of mischief, fun, and imagination. The Cat stirs things up, causes trouble, but always sets things right again, helping Jojo to discover the power of his own imagination as they create the story for the show together. The Cat plays many comedic cameos and must be comfortable improvising with an audience.
Horton the Elephant is a gentle giant. Think of him as a big-hearted guy who is steadfast, responsible and always tries to do the right thing for his friends. He is imaginative and receptive to the world around him. Horton’s view of the world never changes – he believes in its goodness. Horton goes on quite a journey throughout the show but stays true to himself, even when the going gets tough. (vocal part: tenor/baritone)
Gertrude McFuzz is very self-conscious about her one-feather tail. Gertrude gains confidence throughout the show, changing from an anxious, nervous, shy bird into someone whose self-worth doesn’t rest on her appearance. Ultimately, Gertrude realizes what’s truly important in her life. (vocal part: soprano)
Mayzie La Bird is self-centered, selfish, and vain. Mayzie will never admit to her own flaws. She manipulates anyone she can into doing what she wants. But Mayzie isn’t all bad. In giving up her egg to Horton once and for all, she has a moment of generosity-she realizes she isn’t the kind of person who would be a good parent, and she does the best thing she can for the egg. (vocal part: mezzo)
Sour Kangaroo isn’t really sour at all. She’s just got a lot of attitude. She’s loud, brassy, and a lot of fun. (vocal part: alto)
General Genghis Khan Schmitz runs the military academy and is full of pride. He believes he is doing the right thing for his students. A misguided, comedic character who discovers that adults can learn from children too! (vocal part: baritone)
The Wickersham Brothers are not bad guys! They’re simply a lot like kids who tease, play pranks, and get a kick out of making mischief, although often at others’ expense. They enjoy hanging around with one another, making music together on the street corner, and playing off one another. (vocal part: tenor/baritone/bass)
A group of great storytellers who know everything about the going ons in the Jungle of Nool. Great movers and singers. The Bird Girls also serve as backup performers to Mayzie LaBird. (vocal part: soprano/mezzo/alto)
Mr. and Mrs. Mayor are Whos who are parents trying hard to raise a difficult child in a difficult world. They may get aggravated with Jojo, but they love him dearly and try to do the right thing. (vocal part: tenor)

The Grinch is a happy member of the Who community, but this wasn’t always the case. He once lived angrily apart and wished to disrupt the pleasantry of the Whos. His story and change of heart are all part of Who culture now, and happily retold every Christmas. (vocal part: baritone)
Yertle the Turtle has a sense of entitlement and a need for order. He likes to be the one who is looked to for decision-making and setting things right. (vocal part: baritone/bass)
A black-bottomed eagle who drops Whoville into a field of clovers. A member of the Jungle of Nool. (vocal part: tenor/baritone/bass)
The citizens of Whoville look a lot like you and me, only so small they are invisible to the naked eye. (vocal part: all)
Members of the Jungle of Nool. (vocal part: all)
