Grappling with grief, addiction, and the aftermath of a s*icide attempt, Zach keeps himself sane with a cynical sense of humor. He fully rejects social norms, and doubles down on his self-destructive decision making by embracing his impulses. Deep down, Zach sees himself as a lost cause, but through the relationships he develops, and the compassion others show him, a real desire for human connection and understanding is born.
Torn between his obligations as a husband, and waning ambitions as a fledgling filmmaker, Ryan struggles under social expectations he’s set for himself. Fearful of ending up like his brother, Ryan rushed to get married young to Kenzie, whose desire to settle only further makes him believe that his filmmaking dreams are in jeopardy of never coming true. Dutiful to a fault, Ryan’s ability to focus on solutions (even reluctantly), can make establishing emotional connections difficult.
Kenzie is the embodiment of warmth and comfort. Her devotion to her faith serves as the foundation for who she is as a person. She believes the role religion has played in her life can serve the same purpose for others as well. She sees Zach’s presence in her life as an opportunity to help someone. Her patience and resiliency have made her to be a calm and composed woman, yet when her values are challenged an inner stubbornness rears its ugly head.
A seasoned psychiatrist with zero tolerance for Zach’s games. Dr. Ennis’s frustration can easily be stoked by Zach, much to his chagrin. A rugged pragmatist, if Dr. Ennis feels unable to really help a patient, removing himself from the picture is all too easy. Despite a lengthy and successful career, patients like Zach have eroded Dr. Ennis’ professional passion and devotion.
Despite having excellent composure and a quiet sense of authority, Dr. O’Connell is unable to mask his fatigue, hinting at a challenging career full of sacrifice. Where others see a lost cause in Zach, he sees potential, especially for himself. His deliberate diction allows him to disarm Zach’s defenses and unpack his buried trauma. Despite having unconventional methods, he brings an analytical approach to his work backed by a firm desire to help his patients.
Haunted by an upbringing full of rejection and isolation, Alex is recovering from a s*icide attempt of her own. Refusing to let her demons define her, she resiliently demonstrates a deep willingness to reflect. Her compassion and empathy towards others draws Zach to her. Though more willing to accept the idea of growth and change, she still isn’t afraid to test his boundaries and see if he will meet her at her level. Their shared trauma becomes a focal point of their burgeoning relationship.
A larger-than-life embodiment of addiction. Dr. Green is a confident, persistent, and dangerously persuasive “doctor” who influences Zach’s decision making. He believes his self-titled strain of Marijuana, and unique, “discrete” smoking device could take the weed market by storm. Dr. Green is there for Zach during moments of temptation and vulnerability. He helps Zach make justifications for increasingly self-destructive behavior
Eddy is a chaotic, free spirited individual who’s rarely concerned with the consequences of his actions. His charm and offbeat humor offset the clear danger he’s known to put others in. Eddy is just as much a victim as he is an instigator of his own schemes. To him, Zach isn’t just a friend, he’s a business asset. Eddy is the physical manifestation of an escapist lifestyle, making him the perfect companion for Zach’s drug-fueled escapades.
Wes preaches with humor, empathy, and charisma, gaining the attention of his audience and keeping it for the entire sermon. His approach is grounded and full of patience, easing his audience to a place of comfort before covering topics that are difficult to discuss. Fully aware of the difficulties of life, and complex fragility of one’s faith, Wes approaches each message from a relatable standpoint. As a firm believer in community, Wes is more than just a pastor, he’s a friend.
Methodical, and not afraid to bend the rules if it means obtaining results.
A quiet counterpart to her partner Larson. Turner prefers observing from afar and a “by the book” approach.
