Young boy, Treble/Boy Soprano (A5-C2-low C) The cute and cheeky son of Mr. and Mrs. Banks. Excitable and naughty, he adores his father and tries to be like him. Both he and Jane misbehave in order to get the attention of their parents. Special Considerations: will need to speak in a British accent, be willing to possibly fly at some points in the show. Baritone (G4-B2), dancer. The narrator of the story. He is a good friend to Mary Poppins. An everyman, Bert has many occupations, including hurdy-gurdy player, sidewalk artist and chimney sweep. Soprano/Mezzo-Soprano (C6 Soprano C/High C-F#3/Gb3), dancer Jane and Michael Banks's new nanny. She is extraordinary and strange, neat and tidy, delightfully vain yet particular, and sometimes a little frightening but always exciting. She is practically perfect in every way and always means what she says. A mezzo/soprano with strong top notes, she should be able to move well and precision and diction is key. Baritone (E♭4-B♭2). The father to Jane and Michael Banks, is a banker to the very fiber of his being. Demanding "precision and order" in his household, he is a pipe-and-slippers man who doesn't have much to do with his children and believes that he had the perfect upbringing by his nanny, the cruel Miss Andrew. His emotional armor, however, conceals a sensitive soul. A baritone, George may speak-sing as necessary. "The Spongebob Musical"
Mezzo-Soprano (D5-A3). George's wife and Jane and Michael's mother. A former actress, she is a loving and distracted homemaker who is busy trying to live up to her husband's desire to only associate with "the best people" as well as be the model wife and mother. She suffers from the conflicting feelings that she's not up to the job of "being Mrs. Banks," yet, she learns that she is, and more. She has great warmth and simplicity to her tone. Soprano (F5-F#3/Gb3). George's overbearing and scary nanny. With her bottle of nasty-tasting brimstone and treacle to keep naughty children in line, she is a bully who only knows one way of doing things - her way. Alto (D#5/Eb5-A3). The housekeeper and cook for the Banks family. Overworked and harassed, she's always complaining that the house is understaffed. (Range: Tenor, A3–C5); All of the latest hits are played on WAXX, and this singer performs the latest one, It’s Raining on Prom Night, as a duet with Sandy. A proud and talented pianist. A Black man who believes that he can take part in the new America and will be treated fairly. Special Considerations: Coalhouse uses and is called racial slurs, deals with racial violence and trauma, delivers trauma unto others, and fires a gun onstage. Sarah is a young Black washwoman filled with a strong will to live, fueled by an innocent spirit. Falls deeply in love with Coalhouse after much resistance. Special Considerations: Sarah is called racial slurs, deals with racial violence and trauma, deals with the trauma of burying her child and leaving him to die, and is beaten onstage (though this will most likely be staged in silhouette). The consummate wife and mother. A kind woman with incredible moral fiber. Refined, intelligent, graceful and open minded. Special Considerations: Mother finds a baby buried in the ground and must deal with that onstage. Staged, physical intimacy with Father, though nothing more than kisses on the cheek. Mother's professionally successful husband. Fancies himself an amateur explorer, he is commanding and stoic. Enjoys being the family breadwinner, a traditionalist. A Latvian and Jewish immigrant father. He wears the trials and tribulations of his past on his sleeve, but remains optimistic that he will be successful. Full of genuine drive and heart. He lives for his little daughter. Special Considerations: Tateh must deal with the attempted propositioning of his daughter onstage. Staged, physical violence. Eastern European / Latvian dialect.
