A seventeen-year-old black male with much intelligence, resourcefulness, and opportunities. However, finds himself in a dark and conflicting place while mourning the violent death of his older cousin Tyreek. The conflict causes him to be divided when presented to go into the world self-discovery at an African manhood training camp. In the process, he receives a glimpse of himself in both worlds and the consequences of involving himself in them.
A fifty-year-old African centered school psychologist, who takes Malik in after his cousin is murdered. Dr. Koni is very wise and tries to lead Malik in the direction of his destiny through the wisdom of his ancestors. He leads with both tough love and patience, determining to help Malik decide what he wants out of this life.
One of Malik’s best friends since childhood. He is very caring of Malik and tries to look out for what he believes to be his best interests. He’s a high school dropout and has turned to the street life full time. Not wanting Malik to lose his street credibility, he presents him with the opportunity to avenge Tyreek’s murder and prepares the alternate version of him to complete that task. He puts a lot of pressure on Malik, believing that this is what Tyreek would have wanted for him.
